Westerns (and Leone)

Is there any hope of Fistful of Dollars and Few Dollars more being released ala Good/bad/ugly? What are they waiting for? It's a license to print money!

Anyway do you think I should just go ahead and get the current versions? Would also like suggestions for other great westerns as well (good John Ford pick?)

Thanks

Just buy the VHS tapes, they're more profitable. Who really buys dvds for their great transfers? Are you really going to re-watch those bonus's enough for the whole buy to be profitable? Just get the VHS movies and then we'll see how much you'll want to rewatch them.

I am sort of partial to "The Man Who shot Liberty Valance" as a good John Ford pick.

Not sure, but if you are asking whether we will see better versions of Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More on DVD, the answer is yes....eventually. They are in the process of being restored and will see improved DVD releases (lets face it, the current MGM disc transfers of the two films aren't that great), but no dates have been announced as of yet.

As for other western recommendations, I'm rather fond of Once Upon a Time in the West, The Great Silence, Django and Face to Face (the last one not available in R1 unfortunately)

Thank you all for your suggestions, I think I will hold off for revamped versions of FOD and FAFDM- it sounds like they're being worked on.

I have OUATITW already (bloody brilliant) and will check out some of the other suggestions, thanks!

The Seachers, Once Upon a Time in the West, Shane, and Django are some good choices if you are getting into westerns.

I was watching Fistful of Dollars the other day and was hoping for a better copy one day.

There's some other good spaghetti westerns that could either be on DVD or have better transfers on DVD:

Death Rides a Horse
The Grand Duel
Navajo Joe

(and yes, I do realize that all of these were referenced in Bill.)

I agree, especially with Death Rides a Horse. Actually, I started watching it on TV the other night, but had to stop because the fullscreen picture was just so terribly cropped (but watched some of it to see the late, great Lee Van Cleef and to hear some of the great music later used in Kill Bill). I've seen the film available on a "public domain" DVD set, but sadly, I'm sure the picture looks the same there.

Some of my favorite westerns are:

The Big Country with Gregory Peck.
Winchester '73 with James Stewart.
Nevada Smith with Steve McQueen.

Really? I'd always heard the current one wasn't that good a disc.

Am I remembering correctly, is there going to be a restored re-release of this at some point in the not-too distant future? One of those Warner two-discs?

Yes...this is correct, along with "Stagecoach". However, the current version of "The Searchers" is in fine shape, while "Stagecoach" could definitely use a remastering.

Both a remastered Stagecoach and a 2-disc The Searchers are coming 2006 (!) apparently in a John Ford / John Wayne box from Warners. An SE of The Searchers was announced for an August release in R2 earlier this year, but it looks to have fallen off the radar.

BTW, I'm assessing the R2 The Searchers which does have a decent if not steller transfer, albeit in the wrong aspect ratio (slightly cropped).
