E.T. on moratorium?

Why did Spielberg limited the dvd release from Oct 2002 to Dec 31, 2002?

Is he copying Disney or does he plan to re-release it in the near future?

I own the dvd so I am not looking to buy it.

It's called "marketing".

absolutely... and it's not as though the limited time production run resulted in a shortage of availability

Yeah, I picked mine up a month ago, and there were 3 other copys left. I see them all the time - so it's not like a Disney Tin or something where once it's gone, it's gone.

I think this movie has always been available for a limited time. Originally he didn't even want it to be on home video at all.

It is on moratorium, but still available from retailers, I have 9 copies that will probably sit there a long time.

I bought 2 gift sets and one of the collector's editions for myself and my parents, respectively. I remember the VHS deal where it took him like another 7 years to release it again. I don't plan on waiting or paying a premium. So I guess the marketing ploy worked pretty well at stimulating "artificial demand."

I've seen quite a few copies around as well, don't think it will run out anytime soon.

I see the DVD at just about every pawn shop and place that sells used DVDs, all the time.
