It was released in theaters with an NC-17.
The article really words it all wrong, since the censored R version is for crap-mart & other conservative chains.
Now one thing they should do on the R version. On the cover it should state in bold letters 'censored version' so people know they are not getting the real film.

No they will not!
They only carry the R versions of Showgirls,Bad Lietenant,Last Tango in Paris and other films released with an NC-17 theatrically.
In fact,Hollywood has stopped carrying unrated films altogether, when before they used to carry many. So I do not support those chains at all anymore!

Does anyone know if this was commonly projected in theaters at 1.66:1? It looked that way when I saw it, I thought that the reason might be to minimize the matting that was done on the old film clips that were included. I'm pretty sure it wasn't projected at 1.85:1.
As a matter of fact, this is still playing at the Landmark theater in Atlanta, if I remember I'll try to call and ask them.

Nice, I'll be getting this. And yes, the article got it wrong, the NC-17 version is indeed the theatrical cut.

Besides Eva Green in the nude for almost 40 minutes of screen time, I can't really recommend buying this DVD (renting, perhaps if the NC-17 edition is available).

Hey we should go into BlockCensor and other conservative chains and ask "Do you have the theatrical version of The Dreamers?"..then set them straight if they attempt to say the R version is the theatrical

As happens often, the cries of censorship are just plain wrong. DVD rental stores, Walmart, etc. can choose to rent or sell what they want. It's not censorship. The government isn't telling them not to sell an uncut version.
Would I buy or rent the R rated Y Tu Mama Tambien or Swimming Pool or whatever? No. But I don't scream censorship just because some places don't carry it.

I also was surprised to find the unrated version of Swimming Pool at Blockbuster, but Hollywood Video only offered the R-rated version of Swimming Pool. So has Blockbuster changed their stance on more adult fare in their rentals?
