Unless you've just got money running down your leg, I would not recommend any DVD over $10 for a blind buy. Even the so-called greatest movies have people who hate them, and you could be one of those people. Westerns in particular are a genre where so people just don't like ANY of them. Although the set looks great, I'm not a big fan of GBU as a film.

Especially with GBU being a more expensive DVD, rent it first. If you want a blind buy, then pick up Once Upon a Time in The West on the 3 for 20 deal at BB this week, and if you like that, then I'd say you could safely buy GBU blind.

Well, GBU was made after the two Dollars movies, so in that respect you could call it a sequel, but since there's no running storyline between the three movies and we're never told the exact dates, the only thing we have to go on is that he gets the poncho near the end of GBU and then is seen wearing it in the Dollars movies. So it's assumed by most people that GBU is supposed to be set prior to the Dollars movies.

I just saw all 3 Dollars trilogy movies on DVD. I have to say that "GBU" is probably one of the best films ever made, western or not. The combination of action, humor, cinematography, editing, and music, not to mention great acting by Eli Wallach makes this a work of cinematic art. I also loved the other 2 movies, I think "A Fistful of Dollars" is a great intro to Leone's style and "For Few Dollars More" works better than "GBU" as pure western but "GBU" is a better overall story.

I also believe that "GBU" is a prequel to the first two and Clint Eastwood plays the same character in all three. At first when he shows up on screen he is wearing a totally different outfit than the first two movies but then he slowly acquires his hat, vest, and poncho which is the same outfit he will wear in the first two. Also his character undergoes changes in "GBU" that lead to the person that he becomes in the first two. At the beginning of "GBU" he's not much different than Tuco or Sentenza, he seems to acquire more of a conscience throughout "GBU" which leads to more of a heroic character in "FFD" and "FFDM". He never gives out his name in any of the 3 movies so I think those are just nicknames given to him by other people.

Now next on my list is "Once Upon a Time in the West"!

You can buy all three films in the 'Man With No Name' Trilogy for less than $6.00 each at www.dvdsoon.com .

These are the regular editions, but the widescreen transfers are excellent. (Non-Anamorphic)

If you are not a western lover you should get the bare-bones editions. You may not care to spend on the extras in the Special Edition.

Let me start out by saying I love the new edition with its mini posters and wonderful extras, but I was distracted by some of the sound effects that seem very foreign after having the original burned into my brain forever. The gunshots, although sounding better, sound almost identical throughout. While including the Italian soundtrack was cool, I would rather have had the original English track since the whole filmed was dubbed in either language and I prefer hearing Eastwood, Wallach, and Van Cleef deliver their lines. Also, I wish the added material had been been present in the form of seamless branching so that you could watch either the US theatrical edition or the SE. That being said, I did appreciate how effective the material was at supporting the storyline, but the differences between the voices was unavoidable. I plan to keep the older release in my collection although the SE will probably be my preferred version.

My 2 cents on the sequel/prequel debate. I don't feel the films are related. Clint repeatedly plays the same "type," but there is nothing that ties the film plots together other than he is in them. The first film is a remake of a Kurosawa film anyway. Also, Harmonica in OUATITW is not far removed from the Clint "type" in the other films. If Clint had played the role, you guys would argue it as another sequel. My understanding is that Leone wanted him for the role but he had to decline. Leone westerns each stand alone but are tied together by similar themes, scores, cinematography and character types. You can watch them in whatever order and they each rock.

Buy the darn thing, NOW! The better it does, the more likely we are to see SE's of the other films and a release of Fistful of Dynamite.

i'm honestly quite surprised that so many people like it, mainly because i've tried showing friends this movie, and they found it too slow for their tastes.

I recently decided that all movie watchers can be divided into two categories:

- Those that can tolerate and appreciate slow movies ("The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" definitely qualifies as a slow movie)

- Those who can't

If you want to drive your friends crazy, Rypro, force them to watch "Stranger Than Paradise."
