Why are Criterion DVDs so expensive?

I saw the Last Temptation of Christ going for $29.99 at Best Buy.

Why do they cost so much money?

Because they don't make the movies. They have to aquire the writes to the films. Some times it costs them an arm and a leg. And they also do it because they can. If people will pay this much then why not?

The majority of Criterion titles are obscure to the average DVD viewer and therefore sales are less then an average dvd.
Also they contain more extras, have better transfers of both audio and video, and usually contain a booklet with information regarding the film.

Actually in some instances that is not true.

Man, if you ever owned a laser-disc player, you'd never complain about a 29.99 price tag again!

But I wonder would Criterion sell more copies at a lower price and perhaps make more money in the long run? I suppose they have studied this and decided this would not be the case.

But if you didn't own a laser-disc player, then you could complain...

Criterion definitely overprices their DVDs, other DVD companies do the same work and charge much less.

Welcome to the forum. Glad to see another person as enthusiastic about DVDs as the rest of us, but please slow down on your thread posting. Three or four on the front page is a good limit. Also, try using the search function and reading the newcomers thread at the top of the forum... topics that you are bringing up have already been covered.
