It costs so little, and will be so enjoyable until the EE comes out, I see no reason NOT to buy.

buy both - with the multitudes of different extras on each set, they are in no way a double dip.

These are films that, in years time, will be looked at as being modern classics. These films will stand the test of time, much like films from our parents' time.

I look forward to sitting with my children 5 years or more from now and sharing these films with them.

Im going to buy both, because I actually like the special features on the 2-disc sets, plus something I fell like watching the shorter version...

My story. Sold FOTR and TTT in a used DVD bundle on Ebay. Now with the TE boxset coming out (and the fact that I am starting to miss the shorter Theater versions) I'm going to buy the TE boxset when it comes out.

Get the TE. You might start to miss the TE's too someday. And me personally, I liked the way FOTR TE started better than the EE. They might change something in the ROTK EE also.

I will buy and own both versions of the movie. I did this for the other two movies also.

Sometimes I feel like a theatrical sometimes I don't.

I'm buying the TE this week. With all the promotions going for this title, it's practially few bucks more than what you pay for a rental anyway.

Plus, there will likely be another upgrade rebate towards the purchase of the EE version later this year.

Target $14.99 - free Duracel batteries and popcorns
Fred Meyer $19.99 - free J.R.R. Tolkein: Master of the Rings DVD, $5 off batteries and free 2L coke
BB $15.99 - free batteries, free exclusive Ent. Weekly Commemorative book
CC $15.99 - $5 off batteries

Now, I just have to decide WHERE to get it

Truthfully, I sometimes find myself more in the mood to watch the theatrical cuts. While Fellowship's EE is much better, the tighter pace of the theatrical cut is sometimes what I'm in the mood for. And though I'm glad to have the EE of Two Towers for the extra footage and the other extras, I prefer its theatrical cut. So yes, I'll be buying.

mookyman made a great point, indirectly that is.

With neither version (the 2-disc TE or the 4-disc EE) do you get both versions of the film. ie. no seemless branching on the EE.

Although most people say that the EEs are clearly the superior versions of the films, some times you may just decide to watch the theatrical and it's not there on the EE. Why? Doesn't really matter. Time constraints or just may prefer the tighter pacing.

Although I have to admit that I haven't watched the TEs of either movie since the EEs came out, but that doesn't mean that I will never watch them.

Shame the EEs didn't do like the Alien Quadrilogy. Put both versions of the films on the same disc through seemless branching. But the length of these movies probably prevents that. Which is why I guess that they didn't do that to begin with.

I just expect to get far more use out of this DVD than any other I'd pick up over the next 4 months.

This movie was so incredible that it'll hold you over until the EE comes out. Plus, it's cheap (you can get it with batteries and popcorn at Targetfor $14.99 and even cheaper if you go the Columbia House route)

Plus, the one drawback with the EE is that you gotta switch discs whereas in the theatrical versions it's all on one DVD.

Since I already have both of the earlier extended versions, I'll just wait for the other one. I'm betting its gonna be worth waiting for.

I prefer the EE's over the TE's, but I wouldn't say not to buy the TE for double dip reasons because it really isn't. When they add however many minutes (isn't it like 30 this time?) it's not really the exact same movie anymore (technically speaking...technically ). So buy both if you like the flicks well enough.

On a side note - Why are so many stores giving away batteries? I fail to see the tie-in? Or did duracel strike a deal to get the some advertising?

I'm getting and keeping the TE and will buy the EE as I have done with the others. I ended up selling the TE of FOTR but now regret it and will re-purchase it used at some point. Reason being, sometimes I just don't have the time or the patience to watch the entire extended versions and would like to just watch the shorter versions (if you can call them that).

for those who claim to sometimes wanna watch the TE over the EE...when you watch a nearly 3 hour movie (TE) what is another 30 or so minutes (EE)? I mean it is really not that much of a difference..for those who say they just sometimes rather watch shorter. Thus I am not quite getting the point you know?, but I am trying...

I'm buying it, but plan on giving all of the theatrical editions to my dad as soon as the EE comes out.

It's a lot when you have to get up early for work the next morning.

Sometimes I just don't want to get up and change the disk too. Lazy sunday afternoons for example when I often put in a dvd and lay down on the couch falling in and out of consciousness. If I feel like watching one of them intently, then I put in the EE.

It's all about choices. I like having both around. The TE's are so cheap on release day that there's no reason not to.
