It's not just because it's shorter. See my earlier post.

I'm going to either rent it or borrow it from my brother, since he's already told me he's going to buy it on 5/25. I'm going to wait and buy the EE later this year... yea!

Let me repeat again for the answer. You do not have to change discs on the TE which is one BIG plus. Some of us don't have a disc changer DVD player you know.

Plus I like the opening in the original FOTR better actually.

If you haven't seen it in the theatre: Rent or borrow the TE. Collect the EE.

If you have seen it in the theatre: Collect the EE.

I like owning the theatrical release in addition to an extended edition.

These films deserve as much $$$ as they can make and that's the message I want to send.

I will probably buy it today, than trade it when The EE comes out.

I'm not a huge fan of the theatrical editions. for one thing the bit rate is much less, and I have a big screen HD tv so It shows. Plus I like the DTS sound better.

And come on, This finally resolves the Saruman question. That way 10 years from now when my kids watch this and say what the crap happened to him I will be able to show them

I never get this argument.... is it so bad to change disc? I only have a single disc player, but I would gladly change discs in every movie if they are all like LoTR in terms of quality and enjoyment. It takes 1 minute, maybe alittle more. I am going to pass the TE just because for the last 2 movies, I never touch the TE after I got the EE.

What about neither?

I haven't seen this film and will wait till Nov/Dec and buy and view the extended edition.

I agree. Even regular length movies released on DVD as flippers don't bother me.

Get off your arse. Get another beer, take a wiz, flip the film. No big deal.

I appreciate changing the EE discs. Since the breaks are at logical "intermission" points, I will use the series as a 6-part event, watching a disc a night for 6 nights.

Sometimes I just don't want to get up and change the disk too. Lazy sunday afternoons for example when I often put in a dvd and lay down on the couch falling in and out of consciousness. If I feel like watching one of them intently, then I put in the EE.

I'll buy the TE, watch it, sell it, and then pick up the EE this coming holiday season. Always works fine for me, thanks to eBay and moms who use eBay

I just got the "Fellowship of the Ring" Collector's Set with bookends...anybody want them? They are still in Collector's set box, un-touched and secured. E-mail me with reasonable offer, include shipping. I am verified Paypal. And 99.3 positive feedback on eBay. Let me know if anyone interested. I must say they are very nice pieces, heavy and seem like quality. I just have no room or need.

That's interesting. I just picked up my copy at Walmart and my ROTK cover art doesn't have the Academy Award banner at the bottom but instead has a critics quote.

that is another thing that wasn't mentioned in this whole buy or rent discussion...the TE was the Oscar Award Winner for Best Picture!!! The EE was not. Funny, how I don't think anybody brought that up in their arguments.

That said...i bought the TE and happy!

Wow interesting! I did notice the whole oscar thing on the bottom and how it deviates just a tad from the previous two. I never would've figured there were two different 'versions'- who would've thought!

Neither really, I would just wait for the EE box they'll come out for ROTK.

You guys do bring up valid points though; I might just buy the TE releases of the LOTR trilogy.

I only bought the EE of the first two when they came out, but decided to buy the TE box set Tuesday. Different extras was part of the decision and it was a great series of films. GUARANTEED that if and when they arrive in HD-DVD, they won't contain all of the extra material.

I bought it so I will have a complete set in the fall when the EE is released. The movie will be viewed enough times over the next 5 months that it will justify the $$$.

My wife co-worker gave her a $5 gift card to Blockbuster and after turning a cheap dvd someone gave me for my Birthday, the price for the TE was only $9.09 (tax included) - only paid $4.50 more compared to renting.

So, find a good deal and buy it.

I bought the TE from CH so my average price was about $7.50.

I will buy the EE and get a $5 rebate.

I will sell or give away disk 1 of the TE and keep disk 2 in a sleeve in the EE box.

I guess the Academy hasn't read the book.
