Of course, that boxed set is larger than most Tokyo apartments, too, so maybe it's worth it.

Most people in this forum probably have thousands of dollars invested in their DVD collections anyway.

It does get expensive for anime fans if they have a wide range of interests.
I bought the Perfect Collection Box Set (in itself pretty nice) and the 2 movies for under $150. This sure seems like an insane markup. What extras does it have besides a bitchin box to merit the extra $850? Does it come with a full-scale EVA?

The Eva Renewal box set is a R2 release and they are typically high priced compared to R1 anime DVD's. The video is all remastered and audio also is remastered in is 5.1 plus loaded with extras. ADV is releasing the remastered version of the TV series this summer titled Platnium Edition with a LE slip case with each volume. Pretty much nothing compared to the uber R2 box set.

HOUSTON, April 20, 2004— ADV Films, the #1 producer-distributor of anime in the U.S., has set a July 27, 2004 release date for the first volume of Neon Genesis Evangelion – Platinum Edition. Each episode of the enormously influential Evangelion television series has been officially revised and digitally remastered for this new release by original creators GAINAX to create beautiful, vibrant video and crisp, sparkling new English and Japanese 5.1 surround sound audio, creating the ultimate Evangelion DVD experience.

Neon Genesis Evangelion – Platinum: 01 is the first release of seven DVD volumes, which over the course of 26 episodes will include new cast and crew commentary, four bonus Directors’ Cut episodes and seven animatics (moving storyboards). Each volume also includes a limited edition collector’s slipcover in an exclusive metallic finish, limited to the first pressings only.

About Neon Genesis Evangelion:

Created by acclaimed director Hideaki Anno (Nadia, His and Her Circumstances) and produced by studio GAINAX (FLCL, Mahoromatic), NAS (Yu-Gi-Oh!) and TV Tokyo (Serial Experiments Lain), Neon Genesis Evangelion is the story of a reluctant young hero, called upon to pilot an immense robotic weapon in battle against alien invaders in the year 2015. As the remnants of the human race cower in subterranean cities, a deadly war is being waged on what is left of the planet. On one side are the mysterious beings known as Angels; on the other, the special agency NERV and mankind’s last hope, the awe-inspiring Evangelions. Piloted by a special team of teenage warriors, these giant bio-mechanical humanoids are the only thing that can withstand the force of the Angels’ defense fields long enough for the pilots to tackle the invaders themselves in hand to hand combat! With the lives of every soul on the planet at stake, these few youngsters must reach down deep inside themselves to find the strength and courage necessary to meet the Angels head on in a desperate attempt to save mankind.

Neon Genesis Evangelion – Platinum: 01 ($29.98 SRP) is a DVD-only release, featuring the first five episodes in both English 5.1- and Japanese 5.1- language versions with English subtitles. Extras include: clean opening and closing animation; Episode: 01 commentary by director Matt Greenfield; Episode: 02 commentary by Matt Greenfield and Spike Spencer (“Shinji”); and ADV previews. The DVD will include a collector’s slipcover packaging and profile booklets filled with screen shoots, Japanese commentaries and character profiles.

Full press release here.

If you think I'm paying eBay fees on a $67 billion dollar auction, think again.

Besides, you probably just want to try to snipe the auction so you can pick it up for under $40 billion.

It's the R1 Perfect Collection, right? It's a good deal for $25 even it was used (8 discs in it).
