Beneficiary of an incorrect price

I had a few bucks in my wallet and decided to go scan around the DVDs at Best Buy the other day to see if anything caught my eye. While I've got a few titles on my wanted list, none are the "I gotta get it now!" type, and some are flicks I have on VHS.

One of those VHS movies I have is Dogma. I would want the SE DVD, but not at the $23 price I've seen. A DVD price over $20 really turns me off.

I made note of Spiderman. Always liked that movie. Have it on VHS - maybe one of the last if not the last VHS I'll ever buy - but at $14.99 the desire just isn't there.

When I got into the comedy section, I noticed the Kev Smith DVDs I don't have but want to get eventually - Clerks, Chasing Amy... and Dogma. There were a ton of Dogmas. That's when I noticed a $14.99 price.

It didn't take me long to realize it was tagged wrong. There were only two with that price. The rest - and there were plenty - were at $22.99.

But I knew they'd honor the tag, and they did, no questions asked, no argument. So I wasn't planning on buying it, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity.

Anyone else benefit from a wrong price tag?

I was under the impression all of the Kevin Smith DVDs were 14.99 at Best Buy, other than Dogma.

the only times I can remember when I did this, was a bunch of used DVDs at a local Wherehouse. I think someone mismarked a bunch of stuff, got the Hannibal 2 disc for I think 6 bucks if I remember right. recently, Natural Born Killers for 19.99 at Borders when all their others were marked 23.99.

Yeah, IIRC, Clerks and Chasing Amy were at $14.99. Dogma was $22.99 - except for the one I bought.

I'd like Clerks on DVD, but I've got the VHS - and since it's a low budget, black and white movie, watching it on VHS seems OK.

Chasing Amy? That's tougher to explain. Good movie, sure, but it just pisses me off. Losing a girl like that for the reasons he did is just crazy.

A few weeks ago (when Target had the Fox cartoon box sets on sale) I was out of town and decided to stop and check out the new Best Buy in Peoria. While wandering around I noticed a Family Guy Season 3 that was way out of place. My guess is that it was an employee stash because it was tagged $9.99!

I was very amazed when they honored the price and didn't bat an eye. I know they are supposed to, but Best Buy rarely does anything without trying to cause a fuss.

Pick up both of them just for the special features! Sure Clerks is a "low budget B&W" but the extras are worth it alone! (And VHS is not OK, I want you to write that on the black board 200 times.)

Don't buy Clerks now. There's going to be a 10th Anniversary DVD released later this year, probably around the same time Jersey Girl makes it to DVD.

Most recently, I got the Hitchcock Criterion set for the price of one of those public domain sets (around $45) due to a mislabeling at Best Buy. I also got the Claude Chabrol set for $15.

Not in a store, no....have had a few good deals with orders placed online..especially with Amazon UK who initially mis-price items and have honoured the mis-price before realising their mistake...in fact i actually have an order with Amazon France for 'Twenty Nine Palms' which i pre-ordered ages ago.....it's currently at the 'being prepared for shipping stage' and my account shows i'm only getting charged for the shipping (€7) so hopefully that will still remain the same..fingers crossed.

That's good to know. Thanks!

I try to hold out for special/directors/anniversary/collectors editions. Shawshank is one I'm waiting for. And there are other old movies I could buy now, but I'm waiting.

Man I can't believe BB is charging $23 for Dogma: SE. It was part of one of their first 2 for $20 deals sometime around Sept/Oct last year...that's when I upgraded. Great set though, and love the movie.

I swear that the special ediction of Dogma was regularly priced at 14.99 at Best Buy for a few months, and has only recently been bumped up to 24.

My most fortuitous pricing experience was at Blockbuster a few years ago. I rented a couple movies and bought a new copy of The Talented Mr. Ripley for around $20. I still don't know what the clerk did but in the end, he paid me $15 for Ripley, saving me $35 in the process.

I've lost count of how many times I've seen those "2 for $20" deals, and see one film I'd want... and nothing else I'd consider buying. That's the bummer of it. If you don't buy two, there's no deal.

I also got pissed when I bought T2 at BB not long ago - along with Die Hard, which was my main objective - and no one in the store told me it was part of a 2 for $20 deal.

For some reason I returned T2 unopened to BB, and wound up getting it at WalMart for a little less.

Re Dogma, it must've been $14.99 at some point, otherwise why would I have seen two with that price on it? They must've raised the price at some point. And somehow those two got missed for being retagged. I certainly have no complaints about it! I only wish it had happened with Die Hard, too - that was also a $23 purchase.

Dogma SE had/has? been 14.99 for awhile at Best Buy. It seems like it varys from store to store, and went back up to 20+ bucks around the time Best Buy decided to up many of their prices a buck or two.

The best deal I got in a Brick and Mortar store was at Future Shop. Hichcock Spellbound had a price sticker of $23.99 Canadian when all of the rest of the Criterions were priced between $40 to $60. That was the only copy too.

When the cashier scanned the DVD, it came up as $49.99 however, they honoured the price of the sticker without much fuss.

I went to BB the other day trying to get the Fast Company 2disc for $14.99 like some other people here, but it was regular price. Shucks.

Just thought of another . . . anybody remember Musicland's misprice on the ET boxset (listed boxset at regular disc price)? I got in on that, but had some shipping issues and customer service problems. They refunded my card the $25 and then the boxset showed up a few days later.

I used to take advantage of this when I worked at blockbuster. A lot of dvd's were wrongly underpriced in the system. Back in the day Taxi driver for one was only 5.99 in the system. it was neat to come across those mistakes.

south park was another one. ah man, taking advantage of mispriced products.

My only two mispricings worth mentioning both happened at Blockbuster. In one case the 2-Disc version of Once Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was marked at the 1-Disc price of $14.99. It rang up at $22.99 but I pointed out that it was marked at $14.99 and they gave it to me at that price without protesting.

The other is when I tried to do the trade in an old DVD to get Master and Commander for $12.99. They had the regular DVD mispriced at $29.99 which should have been the Collector's Edition. This confused them enough that they told me I could just have the Collector's Edition for $12.99 if I wanted it, which I did. I feel bad though, I should have had to pay them for that Republic release of Highlander I traded in.

Thanks to this forum, I was able to get Dick Van Dyke Season One from Amazon for $19.99 plus two bucks shipping.

Easily the best deal I've gotten on a mis-price.
