Buy, never rent.

Both. I tend to run in (pocketbook) trends. I'll buy sight unseen, but only if I know something about what I'm buying (last blind buys were Penn & Teller BS and Master & Commander 2 disc). I don't blind buy anything that I am questionable on.

Rentals go more for things that I won't re-watch or have very little special features. Been renting at local stores, but unimpressed with ALL of them and have jumped to Netflix for some obscure stuff. PS -- Just found out that the local library has one hell of a Criterion collection!

Buy, never rent. If I just want to see a film, not own it, I wait a few months, then watch it on HBO/Showtime/Cinemax/TMC...

Anyone that indicates that they only buy to an extent negate the fact that you cant buy every single film that is worth seeing. There are tons of non R1 films that one has to see before buy them.

Renting is not a hypocrisy and I most certainly do it all the time. There is a great little independent store in my area that I rent up to 15 titles from per month. Now that I am going back to Chicago I am certain that I will continue to rent and buy what I determine worth owning. But to indicate that you only buy and NEVER EVER rent means that you limit yourself to not seeing some great film as I dont believe that anyone could sustain such an influx of new titles, both R1 and non-R1, where you could buy everything!!

I rent and buy (and am very selective)....so rent for me!!

I do both. I do the netflix route and buy the big titles i really want but i found myself not rewatching many of my movies other than my tv hsow box sets so i just rent a decent amount. Especially when Hollywood Video gives me coupons :0

Never rent. Have always been able to buy right and resell for less than the cost of a rental. Prefer to have something of value to sell or trade instead of just giving my money to Blockbuster

I hate renting. Most likely if I like the movie I'll buy it and renting it seems like a waste of $4. So altogether the DVD costs me $24 instead of $20.

I picked other. I buy and recently started renting through Netflix. I even blind buy still, but only on select titles.

I buy alot but renting is allowing me to see things I wouldn't drop money on to buy blind. It works out nicely.

Other.

I watch films on TV ONLY if I can catch them un-edited and commercial free. So on HBO, TCM and such. But due to HD programming, I occasionally sneak in a film airing on network TV here and there.

I buy films, because I know I have seen the film and liked it, OR the film is considered to be one of the best and the DVD presentation is of very high quality. (I have blind bought almost all my Warner 2-disc SEs, and have yet to be disappointed.)

I also rent, but not as much as buying.
Generally, if I am to rent a film which will set me back $4.30, I just go ahead and buy it if it can be had for $10 new.

If I rent a film and like it, I will usually purchase that film if that version is the definitive version.

But I have still buy the most.
Hopefully if I purchase a TiVo soon that it will lower my costs all together.

Other.

I buy when I can, but my wallet can never quench my thirst - therefore I also rent fairly often. I have a constant stream through Netflix, while my public library is also invaluable - they seemingly have the complete criterion collection as well as hundreds of other titles i've never seen but want to. Family Video occasionally gets my business too for popcorn flicks i don't feel like wasting a Netflix slot on, or otherwise am almost positive i'd never own, but would like to check out nonetheless.

I think the "renting is silly" crowd is, well, pretty damned silly - and they waste a LOT of money....imho.

All the above Some I buy because I know I like them. Some I buy sight unseen because they look interesting and/or I've read good reviews/recommendations. Some I rent first and then add to my buy list, because they look interesting enough to netflix but not buy... others I do this for don't make the buy list because they aren't anything I would bother rewatching (of course having just spent 1/2 hour earlier this evening looking for some movies to watch I guess maybe I should reconsider my definition of what movies are worth rewatching ).

Only buy, never rent.

Since I can't afford every movies, I rent more than I buy. But most of the time (thanks to the Internet) I know which movie I'm going to buy, which I'm going to rent only.

I used to buy just about everything I wanted to see, then I wisened up and now mainly rent and buy only a few discs. I've got over 600 movies, if I kept up on buying like I did before I'd have around 850. For the last 2 years I've mainly rented now, with purchases going to non-R1 DVD's, special editions, and other non-general releases.

I watch about 4-5 movies a week. Previously I would buy them, now I go to the video store on release day and rent what I want. If something stands out that I must have, I'll be cheap and wait for it to be marked down months later, or else buy it from the pre-viewed bin.

I've also discovered something else: 4-5 movies, 4-5 times a month = More $$ than the new truck I bought after switching to renting more often.

I do both, but I do sometimes blind buy if it's something I'm fairly certain I'll like enough to watch repeatedly.

It's the other way around. For a $20 a month Netflix subscription (less than a price of one DVD) you can rent 15-20 DVDs each month and see if they are worth buying.

I've probably saved thousands of dollars in the amount of bad blind buys I have cut down on, renting them and realizing that I didn't like them enough to buy.

I'll add that it is stupid to rent from overpriced places like Blockbuster or Hollywood video. That is different. $5 to rent a $20 DVD? No thanks.

I used to only buy, but now I both rent and buy. When I bought only I missed out on A LOT of movies, and even though I sold the ones I didn't want to keep it started to seem pretty costly and a waste of time.

Now I rent movies I want to see but don't want to or aren't ready to buy yet, and buy the ones I really want. It's not "pointless", I see a lot more movies that I otherwise probably wouldn't have seen, and I don't have to make constant listings on Ebay anymore

I buy a lot, rent through Netflix, and watch TV...

I never rent. I catch most things in the theater and then know whether or not I want to buy it for my personal library. If I miss something in the theater that I really wanted to see, I'll go ahead and buy it. DVD's are so cheap anymore that even if I don't like the film after all, I can trade it or sell it and almost never be out any cash on the deal.

I dont rent...I own.
