I don't consider the original poster's comment a rant. I believe it's a genuine annoyance over the DVD industry's consistent failure to get these simple things right. These types of annoyances are easy to correct, yet these mistakes are repeated over and over again. After packaging disasters such as Aliens Quadrilogy and T2 Extreme, seeing a high profile release such as M&C with another one of these annoyances makes some people shake their head with disbelief & disappointment.

They don't care, and neither do most people who buy DVDs. This kind of packaging favors design over functionality. It looks good in a magazine ad, looks good in the store. They make a good impression on the reviewers who write about them for newspapers and web sites.

Keepcases may be more durable and functional, but these digipacks probably move more product. I think that Alien Quadrilogy is probably remembered as a stellar example of DVD production rather than a "packaging disaster."

The norm is to have the pouch for the insert/booklet on the LEFT side, though, not the right. That's how nearly all digipaks work. It's the standard.

Can you name a set that has the booklet pouch on the right?

Not all digipaks have inserts or booklets.

And my X-Men 1.5 has the booklet on the left. Weird.

Sounds like Buena Vista (Disney, Miramax, etc.) put their sleeves on the right. I'll have to check through some when I get home.

Still, out of several hundred (perhaps thousand by this time) digipaks, only a small minority have pouches that are not on the left and don't have a bottom to them.

Wow, that is weird about X-Men 1.5. I went and checked again to make sure i wasn't out of it when i looked through my DVDs, but yup, mine is on the right. It doesn't look like much of a pattern... Roger Rabbit and Jackie Brown were both on the left side (friend has Pulp Fiction, i forget which side that's on) while Sixth Sense and Unbreakable are righties. Fox has Fight Club and ID4 on the left but also has 'Mary' and X-Men on the right. Shrug.
