For me, it's good for letting family and friends take a look at what I have (e.g., before I go for a visit so they can request movies, etc.). Also, some people around here like to take a look . . . fine by me.

If you are worried about the hassle of entering them all in, DVD Aficionado has a cut-and-paste style "Quick Import" function that will allow you to add in your entire collection very quickly and easily.

Log into DVD Profiler website, and click on the "My Collections" link, and it will tell you your stats.

I have about 1400 hits.

I often check out others lists just to see similar interests.

I also give the web address to my parents and in-laws in case they want to borrow any.

DVD Profiler is my favorite. I have the Paid Premium Reg, and couldn't be happier.

I frequently check out other people's for the reasons already mentioned: if they have similar tastes I can find new similar titles, helps me realize the type of person I'm dealing with (I can't believe we all judge/stereotype people based on their collections, heh), and just to browse in general incase they've got something I totally forgot about.

In DVD Profiler the hits thing doesn't appear in My Profiler...I'm guessing maybe it's a premium-only service...but oh well I've been meaning to upgrade for months anyway.

I always check out the tastes of others.

Then I check gutwrencher's if I need a good laugh.

It may seem like you're bragging by posting these, but sometimes it's cool to see what other people have and how similar their tastes are to yours.

The main reason I keep my DVDAF updated, is because it's a good place to pile in a want list.

I update mine on Guzzlefish everytime I buy a new DVD. It saves me the trouble of alphabatizing my DVDs myself. So I just add a movie and check where it should go.

Also if I'm doing trades the other party can just check the link. Sometimes a rate my collection thing is fun or if someone just wants to check my collection for the sake of checking it out.

I don't really look at other members collections but I have mine listed because I sometimes trade on this forum and its a good way for people to see your haves, wants, trades, etc.

For me, message boards have always primarily been about making friends with those whom share my hobbies. Most of my friends from work don't collect the things I do, and don't watch the same type of programming I do...so I like to "listen" to the opinions of others who do. That brings me to my secondary reason for being at message boards, which is to learn more about my hobby.

I love the ability to show my collection and to see others' collections to help and establish these online friendships. Obviously, the more titles (or genres) in common, the easier it is to establish the friendship.

I never user to post mine here, but since people seem to enjoy checking them out, I guess I'll start.

If you skip by the American Pie movies, you'll see I have quite a few decent movies. Beyond that, show me a crappy title in my collection and I'll show you a movie my wife picked out.

I keep my list online for insurance purposes. If my house burns down, and my list was on my computer, that's not doing me any good.

I like to look at others links occasionally. For instance, I may have gift certificate and be drawing a blank on what to buy. Skimming others collections is a way to refresh my memory of some titles I've been wanting to pick up.

I occasionally check out other lists to see what I might be missing and to see what DVDs I have in common with others.

I have looked through your collection before. Kinda odd since it isn't in your signature.
Yeah, I think I posted it within a post before just like I did here.

Probably need to go ahead and add it in my sig.

I remember thinking this guy sure does like Star Trek.
I just like sci-fi. I like Trek for the sci-fi, not for its utopian economic system. I say that because at the TrekBBS, a lot of folks like Trek because of the utopian system it portrays. I like it for the 'splosions.

I need to get out more I think.
Actually for sci-fi, I probably enjoy Babylon 5 and Stargate SG-1 better.

I like looking at them.

Plus, if I'm somewhere else, and want to look at my own, I can just go to DVDTalk, find a post I made, and use the links at the bottom. It avoids excess thinking.

Public DVD collections

I think it serves many purposes. It has benefits for social reasons on boards like this and with friends you trade and lend/borrow with.

I am all for getting to know posters based on their collection. It's a real good test of credibility, on whatever subjective level you like. That said, it's always the smaller collections that say more than the bigger collections.

New collections to look at!

Mike, seeing Babylon 5 on your list again reminds me I need to check that out still. So much to see!

Do any of the other online services (other than DVDPROFILER) allow you to have more than x amount of dvds?

I have 1600 dvds in my DVDPROFILER at home, however they won't let me upload them anymore to the website, as I have too many and they want me to subscribe (imagine that?).

So, if anyone visits my list, they get a snapshot of what it used to look like 3 years ago. I'd like to rectify this (without paying money if possible).

edit: actually, now it looks like they've taken my remaining collection off line. hmm.

I review people's collections periodically to see who I'm gonna rob.

Other than that, I keep my own collection on an Excel spreadsheet. Easily customizable and that way I can keep track of how much I paid for what, when.

They probably think if you can afford 1600 DVDs, you can afford to pay for the space they take up on their server...
