DVDTalk Definitive Editions Thread
Hey guys and gals. Often times I see a lot of threads pop up here about "which version should I get" when there are multiple versions of a certain title. This even proves true when there are a bunch of foreign releases of the same title that may or may not be better than the domestic release. Review sites like DVDBeaver help compare various aspects of certain DVDs including picture, sound, and extras between domestic releases, as well as foreign. If we could keep a running list of the "definitive editions" that are out, it could help people know which version to get of which film, and why. We could even link to various reviews of each DVD and whatnot. We could also have a domestic runner-up, for people who want to stay within their country region. Anyway, if this idea gets enough support, maybe we could move forward and make this one of those "official threads."
I've seen a few threads for films like Night of the Living Dead, where basically everyone suggested that the Millenium Edition was the way to go, thus making it the current "Definitive Edition."
Right now I'm looking for the best versions of Fritz Lang's Metropolis and F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu, so I thought I could propose this idea while asking about these two titles.

2. Nosferatu -- Kino, for picture quality. Image, for commentary + extras.

Kino all the way on Metropolis, as there is no other version that even comes close to what Kino did with the film. As for Nosferatu, Kino probably gets the edge again, although I wouldn't totally dismiss the Image version. I know this is a "Definite Edition" thread, but I'd say that both are pretty even, although Kino does have a slightly better transfer. If you're a fan of the film, this would be one of those occassions where it may be best to get both versions, since the extras on both are different, if I recall correctly.

Awesome guys, thanks. I don't know if I'll go with the German R2, but I guess it'd be more "true" to the original.
