Yeah, a person who values personal relationships over material goods definitely deserves an eye-rolling. If it came down to your wife or your walk-in closet film "library," which would you choose?

I am not a snob HOWEVER...as Rich (the British Pal) mentioned there are some issues here.
My collection is about 80% European discs quite a few of them OOP, hard to locate, pricey....you name it. Many of the older Italian discs that I have are nowhere to be found nowadays. So this is an issue for me...I am in R1 land but R2 takes a larger portion of my collection. Besides....the French/Italian/Spanish or whatever else European films are not everyone's cup of tea (because....DRUMROLL...you have to "read" the films
) so I am off the hook rather easily. People are shocked that I have all these "art...foreign" films...and as soon as they look around and cant see anything they know...then....game over
.With R1 discs.....they are more than welcome to visit me and have a nice show for free (and so are YOU)!!!
Cheers,

You make good money, so it seems a bit miserly to me that you wouldn't loan out your DVDs if the enjoyment it brought to your friends or relatives exceeded the negligible financial strain to you from the occasional damaged disc (OOP discs excluded).
I don't think that being a collector precludes sharing your collection--in fact, it's a physical extension of coming onto this forum and giving or receiving film recommendations. I like loaning out my DVDs to my friends and girlfriend so they can discover the films that are important to me. Filmmakers make films to reach an audience. I think collecting DVDs and not sharing them runs directly counter to the purpose of filmmaking.

Yes, and gladly.
At any one time I have about 20-30 dvds (out of my 600, or so, dvds) loaned out.
The only anal thing I do is put the dvd I'm loaning in a blank jewel-case and turn it's empty dvd-case on it's side, so I know what's lent out - and so the case won't get damaged - people tend to treat the discs pretty well, but they couldn't care less what happens to the package.

I loan to some family and a few friends. I use rental software and actually rent them the movies (at $0) so that I can keep track of who has what.. I got tired of forgetting who has what movie and "losing" movies from that.. My only gripe so far has been to the family/friends with kids.. when i loan them out i reafirm DO NOT LET YOUR KIDS TOUCH MY DVD... that doesn't always help.. getting a dvd back all little kid finger printed just makes me mad and oh wait whats that? a damn booger!!?? ugh.. I had to have a chat with my sister about that one lol.

Of course, it's only a DVD. The thing is that they shouldn't "get beat up." There's no need for that. Since when does lending mean beating up things or breaking them? Some of these people who borrow DVD's don't have the money or don't want to spend the money on DVD's, yet, they treat someone else's DVD's like crap!!!!

yeah...difficult...sorry. when you threw in "wife"...that got me going. to me, a wife and a buddy are two different things.

you do have all these things that you could afford to give away...I dont!! If I had a car and an SUV and a large dvd collection, and a nice house (as I assume that since you live in Hawaii your house is times better than my one bedroom college size apartament)....then you could afford to replace some of your material things.
I dont have your freedom (financial) and doubt it I ever will. With this said I have given plenty of my criterions away to close friends....I just dont do it on a regular basis. I respect personal property (because I grew up not having anything) but more often than not I can not affor to replace something I've had for a long time.
Hope this makes sense....

I don't mind lending out my DVD's as I enjoy introducing people to interesting films. Most of my collection is not mainstream so if I can turn a new person on to some part of world cinema or some strange horror title, then it's worthwile. If I lose a disc it's okay, hopefully I will be able to have some wonderful conversations about the films. My sister just walked off with 15 titles tonight, she started with 5 and I kept adding to her stack.

I recently lent out a few to a woman my mom works with, she's wonderful and has hit a rough patch and needed some good movies so I thought nothing of it. A few weeks later I got them back unwatched, she just didn't have the time to watch them.
My boyfriend gets to borrow any DVD of mine he wants, and I trust him with my life so I certainly do with my movies (especially since he has a nice collection himself) I don't have a problems unless the person is new to me or unsavory is some way.

Whats the big deal? I can understand if you have an OOP or hard to replace DVD. But most of my dvds I could replace for between $10-20. There is a slight risk my DVD might come back damaged after I loan it out. For me, the $10-20 risk is worth it to make my friends and family happy.

Some I don't lend out. Others I don't mind so much. If it is a movie I have seen recently and then I buy the DVD I'll loan it to a co-worker to watch. Then I ask him "Did the disc give you any problems?" That way I can know if there are glitches without having to watch the movie over again so soon.

Ah, yes, the monthly repetitive question, "Do you lend out DVDs." How about no way in hell, not even over my dead body? Want to see a movie, go sign-up w/ netflix and quit humping my leg you damn hobo.
LOL, nice, real nice. Although the bit about hitting them w/ a brick is too soft for me. I will them in the knee caps and chop off one of their hand before they leave my house w/ a movie.

I don't mind lending out, but I do dislike people who keep the discs for extremely long periods of time. I own the discs because I watch them. Someone else having it means I can't watch it.
Plus, I think it's disrespectful for people to take several weeks (or months) to return things they've borrowed. If you borrow something in February, for example, I shouldn't still be waiting in late April to get the discs back.
With most of the people I know, I'm sure they would replace any disc that got messed up in their possession. Nothing like that has happened yet.
