Netflix removed Chariots of Fire from my queue...

Any idea what caused the following email from Netflix?

The movie

Chariots of Fire(1981)

has been removed from your Netflix Rental Queue. Unfortunately,
we will no longer offer it for rental on our web site.

We realize this is disappointing and want to reassure you
that we only remove movies in unusual circumstances.

We apologize for the inconvenience and hope you find
many other movies to enjoy on our web site.

Thank you,

The Netflix Team

I've had it happen when a disc is no longer available, sometimes OOP.

Hmmm... I wonder if it went OOP? Maybe they only copy they had wasn't returned? Oh well...

It is an OOP title. Hopefully that means a newer release is in the works. The current DVD is full screen with a bad transfer. Warner should give Chariots of Fire the 2 disc special edition treatment.

it's oop...

...which is why I recorded the widescreen version off digital cable, and made my own DVD, as the retail is p/s only.

Your wish is granted. During the HTF chat Warner stated that they were planning a Chariots of Fire: SE to be released 2005 during "Oscar season" (whatever that means).
Personally, I'd be happy with a good OAR anamorphic transfer.

So are they legally obligated to remove a title once it goes OOP even though its a rental? It's unfortunate since it gives people a chance to see older releases that might have had features that are no longer on the newer versions.

I imagine someone would rent it with the intention of not returning it.

Smart move of them to pull OOP discs from renting.

I'll bet they only had it available for viewing on a Sunday so they cancelled it.

I see that they still carry the original Universal Monster titles that went OOP. I wonder why they never pulled those discs if they were worried about theft.

And anyone ever notice that Netflix has their own dvd label on some of the movies? Do they have a special deal with the studios to mass produce a bunch of discs with the NetFlix label on them?

Look in the Store forum. Some are saying those "special" Netflix discs are not so special. They're missing some of the features of the "normal" discs.

I don't think they pull things because they are worried about theft... I imagine it happens after they have already been a victim of theft (or breakage/damage) these things don't last forever esp when shipped around the country in paper containers.

It seems they have, I haven't tracked the studios though to see which one[s] are involved. I believe there was a thread on this before though try a search and see if it comes up.

Unfortunately by that time it will have taken Warner over seven years to get what I assume will be a good OAR anamorphic transfer. They owe us a loaded special edition for the delay.
