By the way, anyone interested in caps of the "House of Blue Leaves" sequence in color should seek out the International forum under the FACTUAL Kill Bill thread.

anyone know the detailed differences between the japanese and us versions of volume 1? i know it's violence and a full color difference in the crazy 88 scene, but are there screencaps or detailed analysis anywhere?
I would like to see this too. I've seen postings in various message boards, but they're often vague, incomplete, or downright incorrect.

here's just a sample shot from the crazy 88 fight

the official runtime is 1 hour 51 min and 34 seconds. the additional 30 some seconds is to the anime sequence, and you have to manually turn the subs on for the japanese dialogue.

Thank God I found this thread. Because I was just about to make a new thread called
"The official 'Kill Bill' dvd extras SUCK thread!!"
Man, am I dissapointed with the extras on this release. Why didn't he just put the extra juicy stuff on this release and be done with it? Double dipping

Yes, it's been known for quite some time, that the first releases of Kill Bill vols. 1 and 2 were going to be bare bones, since he has all these big plans for special editions. It was said in an interview with him a long time ago that he's doing this because of the 'collector' in him. He's always thought that collectible kinda things like that are old school and we all know he loves old influences. Everything used to be 'special collectors' items and old tin collectible lunch boxes and action figures... hence what he's doing with the Kill Bill series. He's just more modern and spreading the merchandising to having collectibles not just FROM the film... but of the films themselves. If you haven't done your research before purchasing these sets, and if you didn't really read what was included on the back of the case, you kinda deserved what you might consider as 'wasting your money'. I bought the DVD expecting not much else other than just the film itself, and I'm happy. It's really the movie that counts anyway.

This disc has a nice 40 minutes of extras if you watch the trailers too. Not too bad for a "bare bones" release.
I bought this to watch the movie. I've seen it about five times this week and it will get a lot of replay value, even just in the background while I work.
That's easily worth the $15 that I paid for it for the next year or two while we wait for the Special Edition to come out.

Was the thread Too long and thus you didn't read it?
What we know:
Both films will be re-edited together containing the R2 version of Vol 1 (color fight) will be created and released in a limited theater run. That will be released as the collectors edition dvd.
So Its safe to assume that Vol 1 R2 is the only way you can get Vol 1 uncut without having it edited together with Vol 2.

Thanks, Jackskeleton. I'd missed that, as well (and I thought I'd read everything). My (mis)understanding was that there were would be a North American arthouse engagement of the "Japanese/Asian version", but no existing plans for a R1 DVD of that version. Glad to know it's coming; hope it won't take forever!

It sounds like QT wants to put together a unified "Kill Bill" cut to have it be eligible for Oscar contention.
I can't see this winning Best Picture in a million years - but QT for Best Director - well, it could happen.
