When id "The Passion of the Christ" coming to DVD?

With Easter just around the corner, I started to think of when this might get a release. With how well its done, is a 2-Disc set inevitable? Is there any news that anyone has regaring this?
Also, any news on "Hidalgo". I personally loved the film, and will definetly be picking it up when it comes to DVD.

Any news would be appreciated

I don't have any news but I can imagine around September being a likely time.

From a marketing standpoint, Christmas would seem likely.

I could easily see this coming out in time for Christmas sales, probably around Late Oct, early Nov, but that is just a guess.

At the very minimum, I would expect to see some featurettes and a commentary by Gibson, in a one or two disc version.

Nothing has been formerly announced, as it is still going strong in the theatres presently.

Christmas would be ripe pickings.

"Before celebrating the Birth of christ, Witness his death!"

Good to see Dalvin back on the board.

I do not expect it before 2005, but I could be wrong. I expect that Mel Gibson will re-release the fim theatrically in December to generate more ticket sales and to refresh voters minds for the Oscar race. But, we'll see.

I am VERY interested to see how the Academy is going to treat such a controversial film (which they normally try to shy away from).

Oscars 2005 should be very interesting.

Am I the only person who's getting horribly annoyed by people asking where the DVDs of movies that are still in theaters are??

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!

Given how liberal Hollywood is and how most in the Hollywood media have attacked the film for being racist, I would suspect 'Passion' receives virtually no recognition at all at the awards. It might get nominated for a couple of things, but I will be surprised if it gets more than that.

My guess is the DVD will be released at Christmas time.

Considering how much money 'Passion' made, its almost guaranteed that it will be released during the X-Mas season. They will release atleast some bare bones edition to capitalize on the demand.

...
I think there may be another reason the film might not get a lot of Oscar or other awards recognition: it has not been reviewed very well on average. Given that the reviews are 51% positive / 49% negative on the most comprehensive review site, Rotten Tomatoes (based on 218 reviews) and that their "Cream of the Crop" (the 42 top critics) is at an abysmal 36% positive / 64% negative, I see a big reason for not giving it a whole lot of awards. Many think this simply is not a very good movie, an opinion I wholeheartedly agree with.

Then again, taking into account the film's subject matter, the studio and/or Gibson might go the way of the "Schindler's List" DVD release, that is, get all reverential on us and leave out all the behind-the-scenes material, trailers etc. Since Gibson financed much of the film himself, he might be able to do this if he wishes.

Considering that a lot of studios now announce the release date of a DVD when the movie is still in theaters, I don't think the question is so unreasonable.

I've already read (I think it was on variety.com) that this is indeed the plan

Then I would say that their "Cream of the Crop" don't know a good movie when they see one. I find it diffucult to believe that critics pan a film when the majority of the audiences that see it come out of the theater with tears in thier eyes. I guess these critics didn't like the book either.

Video Business this week said that it's due in August 2004.

Cheers.

P.S. I know that post was a joke, but expect Spidey 2 to be out in October or November, in a standard and deluxe special edition versions.

box office success does not make a great film. If that was the case then you would see a very different 10 top highest grossing films list.

those cream of the crop are major film cretics and it doesn't matter if they like the source material or not, it matters if they like the way the film maker represented that source material on the big screen. In this case they felt that it was U.S.'s #1 snuff film.

I agree although I would say there were a variety of reasons why almost two-thirds of the top film critics in the U.S. and Canada didn't like the movie.

After I wrote my above post I asked myself if there was a movie that did not get particularly good reviews that got a lot of Oscar nominations and I thought of Chocolat. That film got five nominations including four "major" ones, Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Actress and Supporting Actress, but I remember there was kind of a stink raised because the movie was not reviewed particularly well. So I checked on Rotten Tomatoes and found it wasn't that good. But it was still far better than Passion with 61% positive overall and 63% positive from Cream of the Crop. BTW, it didn't win any Oscars.

I don't know if a movie as poorly reviewed as Passion has ever received much in the way of Oscar nominations or other awards or nominations.

Well, I sure didn't. I admit this movie could probably not make me weep because I am not a Christian. But I did not expect to be completely turned off by the silliness of the excesses I was witnessing (to the point of having to laugh at it at times) or to be bored to tears and feel like the movie was four hours long either. I actually expected to see at least a fairly decent film even if I don't believe in the story (Mel Gibson did make the excellent Braveheart, after all). I didn't.

Oh, and it's not "their" Cream of the Crop. Rotten Tomatoes merely collects and presents the reviews all in one place and the Cream of the Crop gets that designation by being the most respected critics from the most respected publications and other media outlets.

Oh, one last thing: How do you know it was a majority? Did you do exit polling?

Wow imagine how many languages of the subtitles we will be able to choose from since i'm sure Mel Gibson would want every single person in the world to see and understand his movie.

Chinese, french, filipino, spanish, russian, thai, korean, portugese. etc... etc...
