Oscars 2005 should be very interesting.

DavisDVD has some rumors about it:
TPOTC in December?? Ok...
Various sources are letting us know that 20th Century Fox and Icon Productions may be eyeing a September or October release timeframe for Mel Gibson's personal ATM machine, The Passion of The Christ. The film may be released as a two-disc set, depending on the length and complexity of the bonus materials which are currently being assembled. Timed to take advantage of the Christmas shopping season, expect this to be one of the biggest individual title rollouts in DVD history! And with Christian bookstores and other non-traditional DVD outlets already lining up to carry The Passion, this could very well likely become THE biggest selling disc ever. Trade sources have also confirmed that the film will be re-released back into theaters in December for an Oscar-nomination campaign. Thanks to everyone who sent in the scoops.

Also, I wouldn't say that Citizen Kane won the least significant oscar it was nominated for.

The Passion of the Christ is a competently made religious-themed horror film.
What's the basis of your comparison again? Citizen Kane wasn't a box office success (it did okay, but was no blockbuster). The only comparison I can see is that both films were loosely based on real people, and made by directors who were also actors.

And although I don't want to go into it in length in this thread, I absolutely saw a point to the excessive, calculated tone of the film. While of course the film did nothing to change my views on Christianity, it did bring Jesus closer to me than the Bible ever did. I can't help but shake my head in disbelief (pun not intended) whenever "The Passion" is referred to as "snuff" of "sadistic". In fact, it's downright pacifistic.

I was the one that refered to it as the Nations #1 snuff film and well.. I stand by my view of the film as that. The lack of story telling and excess of graphic for the sake of guilting it's viewers to gather some sympthy and get them back into a church. It was just beyond what I could take without laughing at it's attempt. This is coming from someone who consider themselves very desensitized to violence and graphic images.
I join the other fella and
when folks claim this is our generations Citizen Cane.
Hardly.

DVD Talk Legend
Anyone who knows anything on why Citizen Kane -- the movie -- became CITIZEN KANE -- the legend -- would scoff at the notion that TPOTC is "this generation's Citizen Kane."
Hyperbole at a most ridiculous extreme.
And I liked TPOTC too, but cut me a break!!! I'm Ted Bell.

I'm not a religious person, but I wanted to see Passion, and found it to be a powerful, well-crafted, thought-provoking movie.
Obviously its DVD release is a good way off, considering the serious bank it's still making in theaters.
But when someone asks me if I "liked" this movie, I tell them this isn't a movie you can say you "liked." I can understand wanting to see the movie - once - but after that, I can't see why anyone would want to see it again in the theaters. So I really find it even more incomprehensible why someone would want this on DVD to watch over and over and over again.

Or maybe I just got caught up in the hype and had to see it for myself.
It's funny, but a lot of my favorite movies have religious themes, undertones or characters - like Devil's Advocate, Exorcist, Dogma, etc.

Another reason is that I wanted to be able to talk about it and thought seeing it was a necessity for that.

I'd like to request that some of the folks out there ease up a bit . . . were beginning to flirt with some serious thread crapping.
Back to business . . . I thought it was a very good movie (with flaws) that deserves Oscar consideration in a few areas (particularly for film editing and cinematography), but, I have to say that I agree with Altimus that I don't see it doing very well on DVD because many people won't want to see it again (although the extras may end up drawing more people in). For that matter, I don't see doing well in a second run in December either.

I'm extremely sorry that my comparison displeased anyone.
Still, both films had trouble being released, mostly panned by the media, are great examples of cinema technique, made with low bugets, and are fantastic films.
That's my opinion, though.
