[devil's advocate] And this is an example of 2 things, neither of which is DR. One is distance effect on decibels. The other is audience "knowing more" than than director/producer/mixer/etc. [/devil's advocate]

The last gunshot in 21 Grams scared me pretty good even though I expected it. Dialog seemed to be presented accurately as well... when Naomi Watts was screaming, it was really piercing compared to normal conversation.

Probably the best use of 'scaring the crap out of the audience' frequency

Air Force One: Superbit.

I always use this to show off my system.

Forgot about that one. Good call. Makes me jump everytime even though I know it's coming. Excellent example too since it isn't all LFE.

The Fight Club mid air collision is a great example, but I really just have two words for you:

Mulholland Drive

oh my god, this film nearly gave my a heart attack through my home theatre system, talk about loud - whaaaaa!

Also I need to give my obligatory nod to Image's IMAX discs - these puppies are the staple of what DTS and uncompromised dynamic range should sound like -

This was mentioned before, I think, but 28 Days Later is a great example...I still jump when the car alarm goes off!

American beauty in dts. the movie got me to jump twice
when Ricky's dad comes in to his room to hit him (its right after Thora's nude scene)
and the gun shot at the end of the movie.

I'm shocked, shocked that no one mentioned the plane crash in Cast Away. That almost gave me a heart attack.

Cast Away is pretty decent throughout. There's a lot of good ambient sound on the island. I think the crash in Fight Club is more jarring though.

Looks like there's a few good recommendations in here that I haven't checked out yet (Kill Bill, Mullholland Drive). The Imax stuff is great. I forgot about those. I have Super Speedway but haven't watched Storm Chasers yet.

Saw 28 Days later again a couple days ago. Excellent example. Pretty much just as it was in the theatre. Need to check out American Beauty again now too.

The single sound effect used at the end of Dancer In The Dark is possibly the most significant change in dynamic range i've heard so far. Especially since all of the sound (apart from the musical sequences) come from the center speaker up until that point.

I'll never forget the fright my mother had during the plane collision sequence in Fight Club. "TURN IT DOWN!" :-)

I'll have to check out Mulholland Drive in 5.1, i'm still convinced the "man behind winkies" scene is the scariest moment in cinema for me. Seriously! :-) How's the soundtrack in that scene?

While I agrre with fight club and the rest, I feel like I need to mention Seven and the Thin Red Line. Beautiful range in both.
