my wife bought me a pioneer 3 disc changer for christmas in 1999, and this weekend I'm going out to purchase 14 movies to bring my collection to 900. thi number include
3 that I have on preorder. my wife contends that this was the worst purchase she ever made. I disagree obviously.

Got a 4.8x DVD-ROM on an Inteva PC in May '99, but somehow lost the DVD codec and it wouldn't recognize DVDs.
Then in Dec. 2001 got a progressive scan Pioneer DV-434 and still have it. Decent player, not great from what I gather. Having a bit of a mechanical problem with it. The disc drawer won't always stay open when I push the eject button. It'll come out, and then go right back in. Gotta play with the button until it stays.
Then a little while later, we bought a Daewoo player for the family room that's so off-brand that our universal remotes don't even have a code for it.
First DVDs purchased was Star Trek: The Motion Picture - DE, Star Wars: Episode I, Enemy at the Gates, Mummy- UE, Mummy Returns, and the Jurassic Park Trilogy.
But now, I have all this.

June 2000 as a birthday present. Saving Private Ryan was my first DVD and I had it before the player. I just bought my fifth and sixth players a week ago.......they have short lives at my house. I've had 2 Panasonics, a Sony and a Toshiba before buying my Magnavox DVD recorder and my new Sony DVD player.

December 1997. Toshiba SD-2107. Paid $300 on eBay. Still works, although the eject mechanism is kind of clunky. Has played every DVD inserted into it.

October of 2000. My first model was a Pioneer. I now have newer Pioneer progressive scan model and really love it. This brand has not let me down.

Bought an Apex AD-703 along with Gladiator, The Evil Dead, and House on Haunted Hill on Black Friday 2000. I got home, hooked up the Apex, popped all three DVD's into the tray, started watching Gladiator, and within 5 minutes it locked up, and the tray wouldn't open....I had to pop the tray open, slide my discs out, drive back to Circuit City and swap for a new 703. This one has been flawless since then. I did the region hack ages ago, though it was quite pointless, since I have never used a foreign disc....
My attempts to buy a DVD player the previous year for The Matrix and Blade had failed, so I had sworn when I bought this player those would be two of the first DVD's I would buy. Of course, I don't think I bought Blade until Blade II came out, and I only bought The Matrix a few months ago for ~$7 from Wal-Mart.
I've been using my PS2 since June 02, works great.

I bought my first DVD player around spring of 1999. I think I came to this web site and read a bunch of people recommending Toshiba SD2109. So I got it for $300 at a B&M store. It's still working fine after 5 years. And now I have 4 other DVD players.

I' ve had my Toshiba SD-1600 since Nov of 2000, got it for nothing by buying 25 DVD's from HMV.com, actually sold the
25 DVD's for more than what I had paid. I still love this player and would never change it. I've actually tried (bought then returned)comparable models since and notice no difference at all.
If I had a digital TV though think today's progressive scan players would look better..
Cheers
