How long have you owned a DVD player?

Well, the 5th anniversary of owning my JVC DVD player is coming up, and I just wondered how long its been since other members bought there first players and have been collecting DVD's?

I got my first player (JVC also) when Gladiator was released on DVD. Can't recall off the top of my head when that was but that movie was the reason I bought one.

Still waiting for DVD to go mainstream. Maybe this Christmas.

(Actually took the plunge in March 1999. My 5th anniversary apparently passed a couple of weeks ago.)

1997 - RCA 5200 I believe. Paid $650 for it at the The Wiz. Originally bought a Toshiba 2006, but had to return it because it didn't have an optical out. I think I actually had discs before the players were available (Space Jam, The Glimmer Man & A Time To Kill).

A late bloomer..... got my first DVD player in June 2000, found DVDTalk about 7 months later, and went region-free in October 2003.

Why, I seem to be the earliest so far & I was actually one of the last out of all my friends when I got my first one.

X-mas 1996 & the DVD player was half DIVX, remember that thing One of a glorious present though. It came with a Broken Arrow Divx, & along with it I got the Goodfellas DVD as a gift, so that was also the first DVD I ever owned.

November 1999 for my DVD-R player on the computer and February 2000 for my Toshiba 3109. Still use both, although I plan on upgrading both some time this year.

November 1998 - Panasonic A100
Had to send it in a few months later to be chipped/fixed so I could watch movies that were locking up. Now it's the bedroom DVD player and has to be the best problem free player I have ever seen. Plays every disc, including copies without a problem.

And found DVDTalk in January/Feburary 1999 to help find places to buy the DVDs online, since we didn't have much around my area. Boy was that a mistake, a thousand dvd's later...

Jan 31, 2001 Toshiba SD-1600. Gonna get new player this year sometime. No CD-R or MP3 capabilities with this player but it's been good to me.

hmmmm. lets see. I bought my first dvd deck in the spring of '99. my first dvd, Robocop, was purchased a few weeks prior. I buy dvds in much bigger arm-loads than I did then....I'm now over 1,500 titles and still add around 10 a week, although that # is falling off due to I'm starting to stock most of what I've ever wanted. hell...who am I foolin'...I still have around 5 or 600 to go.

I went region-free about 4 months ago. including region-free decks...I have a total of 8 players.

I was interviewed by the New York Times last month...which was the icing on the cake, as far as my dvd/film library goes.

Used my PS/2 as a DVD player for a year or so, then when I upgraded my TV to a 32" WEGA flatscreen and Onkyo 5.1 I got a Toshiba SD-3900. I have been very pleased with this player, and it's leaps and bounds better than my PS/2.

June of 1998 - and Austin Powers was my first DVD! hard to believe that was almost six years (and almost 900 DVDs) ago! I'm on my second player - I sold my first Panasonic A110 to a friend and bought the RP82 in 2001.

April 1998. My first DVD was Event Horizon, if I remember. It came free with the player! I still have the same player too, eventually I need to upgrade.

January 2000 - obviously celebrating the fact that Y2K didn't render DVDs useless

And if I might add another celebratory note - I JUST HIT DVD #500!!

Bought my first player on a trip to Hong Kong in Oct 1998, now have 2 region free players, a region 1 player and a region 2 player (which is also my DVD/HD recorder).

Have just under 700 DVDs but have stopped my purchases due to space and being able to rent anything I need to see.
