Finally made the transition in the Fall of 2001. Went to Fry's and got a basic Sony one disc for $199.99 and Vegas Vacation for $15.

I held out as long as I could, as I had an obscene VHS collection.

The rest is history.

My dad bought a demo model of the Pioneer DV-414 on October 30, 1999. Like many others, my first DVD was The Matrix.

I buy dvds in much bigger arm-loads than I did then....I'm now over 1,500 titles and still add around 10 a week, although that # is falling off due to I'm starting to stock most of what I've ever wanted. hell...who am I foolin'...I still have around 5 or 600 to go.:D

I went region-free about 4 months ago. including region-free decks...I have a total of 8 players.

Gut, have you ever posted any pics of your collection? With all that technology & clearly the butt-loads of money you must swim in, you must have a digital camera to show us some photos. I'd love to see what your set-up looks like.

snorlaxnut 03-29-04 06:36 PM

I had a player since November 2002.

First DVD owned: The Natural Decision (hair clinc DVD)
First DVD I bought: UHF
First DVD I watched: Star Wars Episode 1

well, thanks...but since I only spend tips on dvds....I'm not exactly swimming in cash. not much to see man....there is no WS TV...no fancy theater room....theres just nothing to see. our new home will not be ready until a little later this year and until then...the library is the only thing worth looking at. nope...no digital camera. I've never had the itch to buy one and wont until the theater room is finished in June sometime. hell, I dont even have a scanner and I'm using a PC thats about to go bellyup.

now, if someone wants to mail me a camera...I'll take very good care of it for a day or two...and snap a few and then send it back. :D

I'm supposed to be getting some pictures from when the NY Times was here for my interveiw....extra shots of the library that were not used. when they get here....maybe I can post those...I dunno.

Almost 5.5 years! December 26th, 1999. First movie was The Matrix, first player was a KLH from Frys Electronics. It was 300 bucks, didn't play movies that had DVD-Rom content (the matrix lol.) I did buy and rent other movies though, and it worked fine. I rented for a long time before deciding to actually buy my movies. If I would have just bought instead from the beginning, I would probably have twice as many as I do now.

I <3 DVD! :)

outcastja 03-29-04 06:51 PM

I still don't have a DVD player. I'm a cheap bastard that's been using my PS2 since launch (10/26/00)

I got my first one in 1998 and had it for 3 years. I am on my third one now.

Since Oct of 1998, rocked out a Divx RCA baby, it was money

FantasticVSDoom 03-29-04 07:39 PM

Christmas 1999, my girlfriend bought it for me for christmas and I thought it was kind of a silly present at the time. It was some no name brand from Circuit City that she got the 3 year extended warranty on that ended up costing like $300.00 or something. Im on my 4th one now and my wife (yes the same gf who is to blame for starting this all) is constantly complaining on the money I waste on DVDs. Ah, the irony.

island007 03-29-04 07:43 PM

I just made one year.

Corrupteddragon 03-29-04 08:30 PM

Early 97 i believe. There was only like 5 or so movies out at the time when i got it.

Keith123 03-29-04 08:31 PM

Got my first DVD player in January, 2004 (yes, 2004). My friends thought it odd that I had previously bought some DVD's but yet did not have a player. So, last Christmas, they gave me a gift certificate to Best Buy and said, "Get-A-DVD-Player!". I did just that after waiting until the Holiday crowds were long gone from the stores. Having a player has opened up a whole new angle of DVD collecting for me... -smile-

NitroJMS 03-29-04 08:33 PM

First DVD-ROM: October 1998
First Standalone Player: December 1998

SNKapcom 03-29-04 08:37 PM

I got a DVD drive with my old Gateway I bought in Sept. 2000 and experimented with DVDs a little on it. Got my first DVD player on XMAS eve 2001 but only really started to get into owning DVDs when Family Guy Vol. 1 came out almost a year ago. I got a nice Sony with component hookup for our den this XMAS and put the old one in my bedroom and I currently have a collection of about 165 titles and growing.

The Void 03-29-04 09:13 PM

I got my first DVD player in June of 2000.

mookyman 03-29-04 09:14 PM

I got an RCA (yes, with a DIVX player) for Christmas in 1998. First DVD was The Exorcist, and the first one I purchased was The Opposite of Sex (not sure why). And yes, I have a handful of DIVXs lying around that I use as coasters.

GregS 03-29-04 09:40 PM

June 01, got is as a graduation present form my g/f at the time, the player was around after her. im on my second player now and am about to break 100 DVDs

movielib 03-29-04 11:14 PM

I was a longtime laserdisc person and held out a whole year before buying a Toshiba DVD player in March, 1998. My first DVD was JFK which I bought two days before getting the player.
