October or so of 1998. We (then girlfriend, now wife) rented a Philips player and some DVDs from Blockbuster and, the next day, returned the player and went to buy one! We ended up picking up a Zenith DIVX player (never used the DIVX, though) at Circuit City and ended up wrangling a heckuva deal on some close out Carver components to go with it.

I cannot even remember the first DVD that we bought (I remember buying The Crow in the first week), but after 5.5 years we've amassed about 580 DVDs.

Ah... no.

DVD players weren't even available in December 1996 and DIVX wasn't released until 1998. Nice try though.

I got my first Toshiba in April 1997 and quickly upgraded to the Sony 7000. I got a Sony 3000 a few months later as a second player and as of now I am on my 6th, a Panasonic RP-91.

My first was purchased in mid-1997, a JVC XV-501BK.

I bought a DVD-ROM drive, along with a DVD Decoder card (Creative Dxr2) back in May of 2000.

Used the TV Out on that as well as my computer surround sound speakers for a couple of years. I bought my first stand alone DVD player, a Samsung P421, in May of 2002. Still used my computer for the sound, I have a Sound Blaster Audigy that decodes Dolby Digital.

In December of 2002, I upgraded to a Toshiba 5-disc changer. I wasn't happy with it, so after a month I took it back and ended up getting a Panasonic RP62 instead. That's my current player.

In July of 2003, I finally bought a surround sound receiver and 5.1 speakers, so now my computer no longer handles my audio. In fact my computer sound goes through the reciever.

Divx had to have been announced before Dec 1997, because I remember that complicating the decision of what kind of DVD player to get. I decided I wanted to support "open" DVD and screw DIVX.

1998. Had a Toshiba, still have it. Still works admirably, actually. I remember buying it at Fred Meyer and they had a special deal going where they gave me a free copy of Titanic on VHS. At least they had the widescreen video of it.
