Cool surprise with Robotech Remastered Vol. 2!!

Just got mine from DDD today...it came with a mini Roy Fokker Veritech!!!

Are all of these like this? Did Vol. 1 come with one and I missed it?

My Vol. 1 came with a pack of trading cards. The second set is the mail to me now. I'll be sure to mention the Veritech in my review.

My Vol. 1 did come with the trading cards. I wonder what the other volumes will come with.

DVDPlanet is claiming another toy will come with Volume 3 on May 18th...

I personally don't really care for them.

Poseable Min Mei from Miss Macross?

Actually, it would be cool to get Rick's veritech, or many even a mini-SDF1.

I am a huge dork

I canceled my order with amazon because of many negative reviews. They say the video isn't really remastered. What do you think ? is there any improvement upon the previous DVD editions?
I love toys!

According to the end credits this video has been remastered by Animeigo, the company that put out the deluxe Macross set two years ago. I've read that the video on this isn't quite as good because, in large part, ADV has put six episodes per disc instead of four so there's more compression. I'm no expert.

I can say that the video isn't nearly as washed out as my old ADV set and so I'm pretty pleased.

Some sound effects have also been changed and that worried me when I read the complaints, but the new effects aren't bad. Just different. Takes a bit of adjusting. Annoying how loud all the effects are though, it really isn't that well balanced with the music and dialogue during action sequences. Although it sure does sound nicer than the old set.

Definitely worth the eighteen bucks I spent at DDD

I have seen my friends copy (the big brick Macross Saga) and this one is better. The best way to say it is that it isn't as "washed out". The colors are more vivid. I'm not a huge fan of the 5.1 mix, but I still think it's the best Robotech out there.

Well you are looking at 120 minutes worth of video. There isn't much in the way of extras per disc, so you are looking at almost full bitrate space for the data on a dual-layer disc.

I'm no expert either, but I really don't think the # of episodes has anything to do with it. I think the source material is the biggest culprit

Reading some of the nonsense from the Amazon reviews, it's fairly clear those are fanboys with unrealistic expectations. It's like me thinking that Lawrence of Arabia doesn't have that good of video quality because it doesn't look like the Matrix Reloaded. The print is what it is. I think it accurately captures what it is supposed to look like.

That's reasonable too. There was one posting on robotech.com's boards by someone who seemed to know what he was talking about (the hell if I could find that post again!); that's where I read the bitrate thing. But you're right... there's 150 minutes or so per disc and that *should* be fine. Therre are only two audio tracks (no DTS) and no supplements.

I read some reviews (DVDverdict, I think) that did a comparison between Animeigo and Remastered. They said there was a difference, but nothing major. They seemed reasonable too. I also read those Amazon postings you mentioned and it definitely smacked of 'fanboyitis'. I'm personally glad to have the new set.

p.s. The problem with Lawrence of Arabia's transfer is that they screwed up all the CGI

I may be resurrecting a dead thread, but at least I used search!

I picked up Vol 1 yesterday and Vols 2 and 3 today. Got a limited edition Robotech figure with Vol. 2 and 3.

Strange thing is, the figure with Vol 3 has two right legs! The left leg looks like it's backwards. So it can't change into an airplane right because the parts don't fit. Anyone else have this kind of problem?

Right now I just finished the first disc in Vol. 1. I haven't watched this since I was a kid, so I'm going to watch it all in order.

Sounds like an exchange needs to be in order...

remastered video and 5.1 audio. I think they use the new master of the original Macross TV from AnimEigo.

Thank you eau. "Remastered video and 5.1 audio" is tempting but I'm not sure if I want to double dip and get the new releases since I'm happy with the Legacy set.

I'm pretty happy with the re-mastered editions. I may get the Legacy down the road for the extras.

Comparison of the remastered video from AnimEigo's Macross TV DVDs. The remastered Robotech should be using the same master.

More pics here.

I had the Legacy sets and reviewed the remastered editions (the first two....ADV never sent the third set out to DVDTalk )

I would say they are worth the upgrade. The picture is a great improvement. Since this is a show that's fun to pull out every year or so, I think you'd get your $$ worth.

Just my $0.02.

I'm not sure if it's worth exchanging it just for the figure. It's really not much more than a Happy Meal toy. What I bought was the DVDs, the toy is just a little bonus.

At the time I bought my copy of Vol 2 and 3, there was only one copy of Vol. 3 in the store. I haven't seen Vol. 2 or 3 anywhere else, and I've only seen one or two copies of Vol. 1 at the two Target stores I've checked out.

If ADV doesn't respond to my e-mail, I'll call 'em.
