Two versions of ZOMBIE this year?

Apparantly the legal hangups regarding Fulci's Zombie have been resolved....BOTH MediaBlasters and BU will be releasing versions, according to the link below.

Should be interesting to compare - a 2-disc (MB) and a single disc (BU):

I saw that on Mobius too. Both will supposedly contain the same or similar transfers. Mmmm, Mediablasters has alot of extras but BU has an infinitely better track record. I'll wait to read the reviews first when these come out.

may be a double-dip

Buy the MB for the extras disc, then buy the BU for the movie

I just hope someone cleans up that transfer. Zombie is possibly one of the worst DVDs visually that I've ever seen, which sucks because the movie is the most fun. I definitely wouldn't buy it unless it looked better.

Yes...guess it may be a case of mix-n-match for the Definitive package.

What kind of extras are there going to be? The Anchor Bay disc had the Ian McCulloch/Diabolik Magazine commentary, trailers and some hillarious radio spots. (Zombie barf bag??) I've heard the AB disc is missing a few seconds of film, though all the gore was left in tact. Any truth to this?

This is one of the most stupid decisions I have ever read about. Why on earth have two simultaneous releases of the same transfer? Something is rotten in Denmark. We are not being told the rest of the story. I am certainly not buying two copies of the same film.

As odd as it sounds, I'm gonna try not to double-dip on this. I don't mind the muggy picture on the AB disc (Adds to that Grindhouse feeling for me) and at least it's in widescreen.

As for extras, well, if they have a retrospective documentary on the film's legacy, then maybe I'll chip in. But I think I've already learned enough on the making and the history of the movie from web sites, books,Fango articles,etc.etc.

I've heard the AB disc is missing a few seconds of film, though all the gore was left in tact. Any truth to this?
Forgot where I heard it from, but I think it's just for a few non-gore scenes that didn't add much to the film.

Pieces looks bad, wasn't it from the VHS?

Zombie was pretty bad. esp during the dark scenes when they're hiding on the boat and the cop finds them.

Perhaps the lawyers discovered both BU and MB had a valid legal claim, so they had to play nice ?

It's really the only thing that makes sense...

Well, the problem is that it does not make sense. It would have made more sense for Blue Underground to allow the Media Blasters release in exchange for another license or two. I don't see how this solution is financially viable for both parties. It stinks as a business arrangement.

You are assuming that BU was in a legal position to dictate the terms.

Since we don't know exactly what the legal proceedings were, we don't know that.

This news DOESN'T make business sense, I agree.
If you don't think legal issues had anything to do with this, the other explanation left is that Blue Underground is, well, stupid.

I don't believe BU is stupid, and I doubt anyone else does, either.

As mentioned in my earlier post, I suspect both companies realized - or were told - that they couldn't stop the other's release, and tried to make the best out of a bad situation. All we can do is speculate, though.

What insulin_junkie said. Also, it wouldn't be out of the realm of reality that both companies were required to release this movie within a certain time frame or risk losing their license.

While it is wacky to get 2 seperate releases, I don't mind at all. I'm betting 1 company will step up and offer a version that blows the other 1 away. That will be the one I buy .

Or if both versions offer different content, buy both and store them in 1 nice super-slim triple, like i've done with T2.

That's a no-shitter. I'd love to see a nice transfer of the unrated version.

On topic - I'm up for 2 releases. Between the 2, at least one should be decent. But then, I'll probably wind up buying both.

unless there is some really awesome extras on one of the 2 discs, I think I will stick with my AB disc.

getting both most likley...which is no problem. I've lost a little faith in MB, but my trust in BU has only grown. I'll be looking forward to these almost as much as I was for my new french edition of Starcrash!!

I recall reading before the delay that MediaBlasters had pretty much interviewed everyone involved who was still alive, and that the extras were longer than the movie itself.

MB's erratic quality control (to be kind) is the wildcard, of course.

Regardless, MB better keep the same cover art they were showing before:

Amen to that, brother. But if there are significantly more extras, I may double dip.

Well, I agree that legal issues are involved, but why doesn't one side just back out? This arrangement seems harmful to both parties. Given that, I am left to believe that someone is a less than brilliant business man.

The following was posted by John Sirabella of Media Blasters at Mobius:

There will be two versions, ours at $29.95 band theirs at 19.95 or lower.

We are using the same transfer. As far as extras, ours will have more but the premium price. Bill will also have access to all our extras for a later release.

Our version will be in the market for about two years and than Bill can do what he likes.

Why would anyone buy their version? Well the reason is very simple, the price point. You guys think in terms of fans and not consumers. The lower price point version usually always sell more both units and $$$. A good example for me is Versus...

After our term Blue can go and release the best version they want, when they want...I would look at ours since it has been two years in the making and the amount of extras and work done is quite good...

We will make the announcement with July titles....

-john
This makes more sense to me. Blue Underground will have the ability to put out a deluxe edition complete with the Media Blasters specials after two years. That is not a bad deal.

By the way, here is the link:
