status on the 7 remaining best picture winners to appear on DVD...

http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/...ure-DVDs_x.htm

nice article in the USA Today regarding the last 7 best picture winners that have yet to get the DVD treatment (not counting the upcoming LOTR:ROTK) and the steps that go into restoring older movies.

here's the details:

greatest show on earth - april 6

around the world in 80 days - may 18

the life of emile zola - 2005

cavalcade - 2005

cimarron - 2005

the broadway melody - 2005

wings - no plans yet

not exactly the "best" of the best pictures, but i know a couple of people who are wanting to collect them all.

I've been picking them up slowly - I don't have nearly all of the discs that have already been released, but pick one up every couple months. Eventually I will get to the Kramer Vs. Kramers and Chariots of Fire out there. In other words, I'm in no hurry.

I understand that Tony Shaloub is the one holding up Wings. Now that he's a big star, he's ashamed of his earlier work.

Ahhh. So THAT explains why Quick Change isn't out yet.

Damn Shaloub!

Great list, but it should also include those that have the DVD treatment, but have been MISTREATED:

Two I can think of off the top of my head, since I refuse to get them include:

The Last Emperor - terrible transfer, terrible treatment
Chariots of Fire - PAN & SCAN!

Any more like this?

Of course out of that list, the one I want most is wings. Come on Paramount, get on the ball. You're making me grumpy.

The Sting is a bare-bones, pan & scan disc. From what I hear, the transfer is OK, but not great.

Wow! A Quick Change reference! What a great movie that is on my "Don't hold your breath" list of titles that will most likely NEVER come out...!

ACTUALLY, QUITE THE CONTRARY!

Talk about great news!

Warner Bros said that quick change WILL BE OUT IN 2005!

I couldn't believe it when I read it, but the execs themselves confirmed it in the HTF chat the other day!

Good stuff! Can't wait!

Yeah - forgot the sting

The Sting
Chariots of Fire
Last Emperor

(any other stinky best picture dvds - I mean stinky in quality of dvd transfer, not movie. That would be a different thread.)

Am I the only one anxious for a decent release of Titanic? Anamophic is a must; featurettes and commentary would be a great bonus.

That is great news! It would be wonderful if they got Murray to do a commentary, but he's pretty much disowned the film.

Off hand these are the Best Picture winners with less than stellar DVDs:

Titanic: not anamorphic, no supplements whatsoever
Godfather: Bad Transfer, no mono
Godfather Part 2: Bad Transfer, no mono
The English Patient: not anamorphic, no supplements whatsoever
Out of Aftrica: just Crap
The Last Emporer: just Crap, no supplements
Annie Hall: Messed up subtitles
The Deer Hunter: not anamorphic
The Sting: not anamorphic

Edited to remove Patton.

Titanic is supposed to get the proper 2D CE at some point late this year from what I remember reading on this board.

It certainly deserves it, and you know that they have tons of suuplemental material available to them.

It's also not anamorphic.

Patton: not anamorphic
Patton is most certainly anamorphic, and was released in a stellar 2-disc Special Edition.

The single disc version is also anamorphic, but contains few supplements. The 2-disc is OOP right now, but you can still get it in the "World War II Collection" boxed set - which I believe is only around $35 from DDD and also has Tora! Tora! Tora!, The Thin Red Line, and The Longest Day in it.

Considering that I've seen the Patton 2-disc sell on eBay for $50, paying only $35 for it from DDD was a no-brainer for me, and I considered those other three discs free.

According to the recent chat, Chariots of Fire is getting the SE treatment around March 2005.
