The Ultimate Spine Number Collector's Question

There may be more, but there are three studio series that come to mind with "spine numbers" - Criterion, Fox Studio Classics, and Fox Special Edition. How many there are is not integral to the question however.

I am almost finished collecting all the Fox Studio Classics (granted there is less than 20). I haven't seen them all yet, but I am curious what will happen when I watch one I don't like. Will I break up the series and sell/trade it?!?!? (this is asked tongue in cheek, of course).

So that's my question: if you really didn't care for a movie, would you still keep it for the spine number?

People collect for all sorts of reasons. The analogy in record collecting is called "running a label", that is, collecting all of the records that were issued on a record label (usually a small label with a limited number of releases), regardless of the quality of the songs or artists represented on the records. People do this with 78s, 45s, and LPs, and perhaps for CDs, 8-tracks, etc. for all I know.

I don't collect (or accumulate, more accurately) anything this way, I care about the content of the music/movie/book or whatever, more than the idea of having all of a particular series. But everyone has their own tastes and pleasures that they derive from collecting.

I have all the Fox Studio Classics, and there are a few I didn't really care for. But I'm keeping them, since I want the whole set; besides, I might enjoy the extras.

I've got all but 3 of of the Fox Studio Classics. I enjoy all the ones I have with the exception of An Affair to Remember. Ironically, this was the one I was sure I would enjoy since I'm a big Cary Grant fan. One disc that I really liked was the Titanic. The movie is pretty ok but I didn't expect a 1-1/2 hour documentary! Great stuff.

To answer your questions, I'd probably stick with the movie just to have the whole collection since I really enjoy 97% of the releases so far.

Yeah, I've got a Criterion, with #8 on the spine, that I don't care for anymore.

Anyone want it?

I can respect that some people are completists in their approach to collecting DVDs, and that need to complete a collection may involve a particular distributor, label, director, subgenre, actor or other classification. I think such collections can be pretty fascinating.

I, however, am not a completist collector. I don't buy DVDs I don't think I'll like, and I sell off DVDs I bought but didn't care for. To each his own.

Numerical gaps in a collection don't bother me at all - I stick with the movies I like and will continue to enjoy. Hell, I can't even afford all the ones I want, so I'm not about to spend money on a DVD simply because there's a number on the spine.

I don't organize in spine numbers, so I don't care.

I've just started picking up some of the Fox Studio Classics, and now that I have about half of them, I'm considering just getting the ones that price-dropped - most of them are total blind-buys - I haven't seen most - so they're worth getting just so I can educate myself a little better, build up my repertoire of classic films.

I'm wondering how many "Studio Classics" Fox has left. I mean, are all of their old back catalog titles considered "Classics" now?

Jough, after reading Robert Harris' TDB article and the FSC thread at HTF, I would venture to say that you are right. That, and I have a severe acronym problem.
