School of Rock DVD discussion

I picked up School of Rock the other day. The disc is pretty solid. The transfer is top notch and the sound is great. Paramount did a very good job with the A/V. The extras are alright, if a little light.

There is a "Lessons learned at the SChool of Rock" Featurette that is pretty decent. It has some very decent behind the scenes footage of JB and the kids doing there thing. This movie looks like it was a lot of fun. Pretty informative and entertaining.

JB's pitch to led zepplin is hilarious. A short scene of him BEGGING to use the Immigrant song in SOR. Very funny...and apparently it worked!

The horrible School of Rock video is also included (JB's wig is horrific) as are the theatrical trailer (and other trailers and a PSA from vh1).

MTV's Diary of Jack Black is also on the disc and is hilarious. Any fan of JB's should check it out.

The Kids trip to Toronto International Film Festival is a very light look at the film's premiere at TIFF and the kids excitement etc. I liked the featurette but would have liked to see more festival stuff... maybe some thoughts of JB and Richard Linklater.... and it would have been nice if they could have included the TIFF Press Conference for the film...it was very entertaining.

The commentaries are both pretty fun. The kids one is amusing for a while, the JB and RL commentary is a very fun listen as well. Fans of the film won't be disappointed.

It is disappointing that there are no deleted scenes or outtakes from the film included. It sounds from the commentary that there is probably more footage out there somewhere.... for what it is though, this disc is a decent presentation of a HILARIOUS film.

So, what'd you think of the disc?

MATT

also of note for insert hounds, SOR does NOT have an Insert.

I also loved the Diary of JB. My mother watched it and said 'Whats funny about this bloke? He's just a big fat slob!'. I was horrified, and made her watch the movie - twice.

She enjoyed it.

Has she ever heard of John Belushi, John Candy or Chris Farley? Every generation has their funny fat guys.

Chris Farley was funny?

On School Of Rock...I loved the movie but the light extras on the DVD may make it a rental only for me.

so you "loved" the movie but won't buy it because it's "light" on extras? that seems silly to me....from what i've read the Jack Black stuff in the extras is worth the price alone....but to each his own.

this will be mine, oh yes....it will be mine....

Ok, loved is too strong. I did enjoy it though and it's one of my three favorite comedies from 2003.

That said, the special features are light. Besides crystal clear picture and sound, special features are what make DVDs so great. I'd rather rent SOR, enjoy what it has to offer, and then own something that not only has great A/V but an array of features too.

Like you said though, to each his own.

Light on extras? Every release should be so light.

-Paramount's special edition starts off with two commentary tracks ...

-MTV's "Diary of Jack Black" ...

-"Jack Black's Pitch to Led Zepplin" ...

-"Lessons Learned in School of Rock" is a 25-minute "making of" ....

-Also included is the "School of Rock" music video, the film's theatrical trailer, a featurette with the kids in the film at the Toronto Film Fest, PSA for VH-1's "Save the Music" and preview trailers for Paramount's upcoming "Stepford Wives" remake and the John Woo/Ben Affleck feature "Paycheck".

-DVD-ROM features include "Dewey Finn's History of Rock" and the original theatrical website.

For someone who has seen the DVD version, can you comment if they cleaned up all of the scenes where they show the boom-mic hanging over JB's head? It was very obvious in over 50% of the scenes where Jack or the kids are standing at the front of the classroom.

I have a feeling you just saw the movie in a theatre with a shitty projectionist.

Like Miyazaki said, this was probably the projectionist fault at the theater, not the filmmakers.

Does the DVD come with an insert? Mine from Best Buy had the guitar picks and tattoos sans insert.

Yeah it was pretty funny to open up the case and see 2 guitar picks, 5 tattoos and no insert.

I think the guitar picks and tattoos are Best Buy-only additions.

You'll have to explain that one to me. If it was caught on film, how is it the projectionist's fault? I would think it's poor editing on the filmmaker's part.

Great movie, great disc. Bought it and watched it right when I got home. Good stuff. Definitely a movie that I'll watch often.

Little trivia for those who have seen the movie:
When Jack Black holds up a picture of his character's old band, which real-life rocker is shown in the pic?

man, i know KG doesn't want to be in all jack black films, but it would have been AWESOME if he played the guy in the audience that appeared in the movie for a second and yelled "NO VACANCY!"
