Wow, what a mess. So if you want DTS, you've got to buy it in a box set with some other WWII documentaries? What if you don't want the documentaries but want DTS? What if you want the documentaries, but don't have DTS encoder?

The DTS version still has Dolby 2.0.

Well, every DVD is required to have a Dolby track, even if it has a DTS track (which is optional according to the spec) so the only difference is that the DTS version won't have the DD 5.1 track, and will have a 2.0 stereo surround track instead.

In any case, it's hard to say if the DTS version will only be available in the boxed set since different sources list different information.

It's close to release date, though - are there any reviews available yet?

Oh I wish we could get some definite answers. I sold my one disc DTS version in anticipation of this DTS special edition. Hopefully the wait will soon be over.

FWIW, from Amazon's description of the two releases:

Saving Private Ryan (D-Day 60th Anniversary Commemorative Edition)

Available Audio Tracks: English (Dolby Digital 5.1), English (Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround), French (Dolby Digital 5.1)

World War II Collection (Price For Peace/Shooting War/Saving Private Ryan, D-Day Edition)

DVD Features:
Contains three titles:

Saving Private Ryan, D-Day 60th Anniversary Commemorative Edition (includes an exclusive English DTS 5.1 Surround track as well as an English Dolby Surround track)

Price For Peace

Shooting War: World War II Combat Cameramen

Widescreen anamorphic format

Number of discs: 4

Available Audio Tracks: English (Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround), English (5.1 DTS ES)

So if this info is on target, DTS is exclusive to the boxset edition.

I was going to pick up the World War II Collection and I was afraid it wasn't going to be DTS. Actually glad to hear that it is. I only have the DD5.1 of the original Ryan and now that I have DTS equipment, I can't wait to hear it.

Just wait a few weeks and see if they drop the price in half like they did Schindler's List!

I'm going to keep the DTS version I have and buy the 2-Disc SE.

Questions...

Are both editions going to have the same extras as the old edition?

Are there any differences extra-wise between the DTS and DD discs?

No difference extra-wise between the DTS and DD versions of the new disc, since the extras are all on disc 2 this time.

However, neither of the new versions will contain the two extras previously found on the DD "Limited Edition" version.

What extras are those? The DTS version I have includes an Exclusive message from Steven Spielberg, 2 trailers, Production notes, and cast/filmmaker bios...does the DD version feature more?

Yes, the DD version also included a 30 minute documentary called "Into the Breach" about the making of the film.

It was dropped from the DTS version to make room for the higher bitrate DTS soundtrack.

Damn Universal. They first made the theatrical version of ET exclusive to the gift box version (at least in the official new press), then made the original Scarface (1932) DVD exclusive to the gift box version, and now the DTS for SPR exclusive to box set version. Greedy morons!

Btw, I guess the current and soon OOP SPR is finally a "limited edition"

So that's the "into the breach" and what else?

If the DTS is only in the box set, it works out well for me. I wanted to get the set anyway.

Steven Spielberg's video "introduction" to the film, which also appeared on the DTS version of the SPR: LE.

Surely you know how to look up reviews for six year old discs by this time, but here's DVD File's review just in case you haven't yet learned how the internet works:

Surely you're not being condescending....right?

I was asking which extras you were talking about that were cut since it seems like no one has a concrete idea of what the extras will actually be.

Or was I wrong in even questioning you? :P

I have the original dts version. The only thing that would interest me in a double dip is deleted scenes.

It's listed as the "World War II Collection."
