I'll stick with Criterion AND get the box. That's the optimal, if you're a RoboCop fan (and if you are, you enjoyed the second one as much as the first).

I have recently ordered the first movie as a Special Edition from Australia (R4) for quite a nice price (more or less) 18.14 + 4.50 AUD (price at EzyDVD + international shipping):
http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/220153

Its special features goes something like this:

Feature – Director’s Cut
Video: 1.85:1 16:9 Enhanced (PAL)
Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1
Extras:
Audio Commentary
“Flesh & Steel” – The Making Of Robocop
Featurette “Shooting Robocop”
Featurette “Making Robocop”
Deleted Scenes
Trailers & TV Commercial
Storyboard Comparison
Photo Gallery

I think it's a very good buy for the fans. Especially for those who prefer PAL over NTSC. :-)

There is also Robocop Trilogy (3 Disc Box Set) available but I wouldn't suggest it because second and third movies feature Dolby Digital stereo sound track only, and no additional extras.

Hmmm, what to do? I'll probably hold onto my CC and buy the box set. I actually like part 2. Part 3, what the f**k were they thinking of.

screw the theatrical cut!

I've actually seen a workprint version of Robocop 2 and it makes the Criterion cut look like an episode of Sesame Street...

I doubt we'll see it on DVD for some time...probably not at all.

so what was cut from Robocop 2?

As far as I can tell, this DVD will contain a 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer.

And it definitely is the extended unrated cut.

Thank you, 2 pages ago. :)

Professor Frink 02-25-04 09:09 AM

Well, when I sell my Criterion it'll more than pay for the box set, so what the Hell...

Like some of you, I also liked Part 2. I wonder if I can sell Part 3 by itself to some sucker.......

sirbrady 02-25-04 09:38 AM

So the SE will have the Extended Unrated cut ONLY? I don't want the Theatrical on it.

Mr. Cinema 02-25-04 09:40 AM

This annoncement officially ends my quest for the Criterion version. I'll gladly buy the box set to get an unrated version w/ anamorphic widescreen. The 2 sequels stink, but I've seen worse movies.

The Criterion one is 1.66:1, so maybe when this comes out the Criterion version will be cheaper.

Also, Robocop 2 is awesome.

Um, whose theater has screens shaped like that?

Just about any theatre. All they have to do is adjust the projector and/or the curtain.

When is RoboChrist coming on DVD?
I don't know but he better be uncut!

Hmmm...

You prefer uncut eh?

I usually prefer cut. ;)

digitalfreaknyc 03-11-04 09:07 AM

I just looked at that packaging again.

God is it hideous.

Toka 03-11-04 10:51 AM

I'm still curious as to what was cut from Robocop 2. Anyone?

 Thats what I plan on doing.

aynrandgirl 03-11-04 02:37 PM

Is the "new high-def transfer" of the SE different than the new anamorphic transfer MGM did for their recent movie-only Robocop release?

sure hope so (its overly cropped, and has too much color.

QuiGonJosh 03-27-04 05:56 AM

I think I'll just get the regular MGM release out now...

DavidH 03-27-04 09:11 AM

The current MGM versions looks good.

My only question is what is the intended color timing of the film? The Criterion looks different than the MGM, and who knows what this new MGM SE will look like. Was the director even involved with any of this? It kind of seems like another "Halloween" issue.

I'm curious too.

This is going to sound real goofy, but i've seen a lot of films in my time and I find Robocop 2 to be one of the darkest, mainly because of the tone of the extreme violence which gives an air of menace throughout. With the first Robocop there's a lot of humor, but in Robocop 2 it feels forced. It tries it's hardest to top the violence in the first movie but the crucial comic-book feel is gone. Two scenes come to mind; one is where the police officer screams in agony when he is cut open using a scalpel (and the kid is forced to watch), the other is the sequence when Robocop is dismembered in to pieces and thrown on the sidewalk.

I could imagine that the cut scenes go even further, so let us know what's missing! :-)

So Robocop 2 was the one with that annoying Kid who sells that futuristic crack right ?

What was 3 about ? Was that when they decided to make it for kids ? Not sure ive seen that one (or maybe it was so bad, my memory flushed all recollection)

I havent seen these for years (although thankfully i did pick up the Criterion version when it was out :) )

picked up the current MGM disc today...and watched it and found it completely satisfying...looks and sounds fine for a movie pushing 20 years...I'll just stick with this one...

Thanks and a question

I have to say thanks to everyone here! I have been searching around for Robo SE info, and apart from this forum and its links have found little else.

This was helpful though. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...214502-0489769

I too am very curious about Robo 2. I am most interested to see if I can aquire a copy of this Working copy of Robo 2. As this is my first post to this forum, if that request is out of line forgive me.

The talk about the difference in quality and the reviews of the branching versus a cut of the film between SE and CC respectively makes me think that I should get both... Being a completist factors in as well. Well, I'm still young and reletively new to fiscal independance so I don't have some of the things I wish I had... CC robo came and went before I knew what it was.

Again thanks to you all, see you at the movies.

Kershner speaks!

sort of....
Keeping this old line alive: Check out this interview w/ Kershner just before SW:Episode I. At the end of the article he talks real briefly about Robocop 2 and that "james bond" movie *wink*
