There was the four-disc director's cut Vista Series release.

There was the two-disc "60th Anniversary" release.

There was also a gift set, which was the "60th Anniversary" release packaged with a National Geographic DVD and a map.

So, three releases... two, really, considering the fact that one is just a repacking of another. So that's as many as Spider-man... or Bad Boys... nothing really out of the ordinary.

If it had DTS then maybe. Otherwise my 2-disc set is enough.

It's an easy way for Fox to make some cash. Hopefully they'll use some the money to release some lesser known films.

And in all fairness, I believe the 4 disc Pearl Harbor set was announced, or at least known about, from the beginning much like Lord of the Rings.

Multiple releases are fine in my book as long as they're known about up front. I think someone just wanted to whine about Pearl Harbor.

Originally, the then three-disc Pearl Harbor was supposed to come out day and date with the two-disc edition.

Then it was delayed to come out a month after the two-disc edition.

Then it was delayed a few months after the two-disc edition in which it finally became a four-disc edition.

At last - it's such a relief to see something announced that doesn't even tempt me to "upgrade" or re-buy. You've made my day!.

The movie is campy and terrible. Not threadcrapping, just stating my opinion. The only way I WOULD get this is if it had DTS. The 5.1 sound, in my opinion, is just terrible on this film.

I own ID4: Five Star, mainly because of the 5-star quality of the release. As for the film, I liked it as a kid when I saw it in the theatres, and it's still campy blockbuster fun. Not as much as it was when I first saw it but, so few things are.

Anyway, I seriously hate it when studios go way too far in releasing new DVD editions. From what I can gather from most of the folks I discuss this topic with, they hate it too. It's greed, pure and simple. Release a great special edition the first or even the second time. Don't release so many that it's just plain stupid.

Digitalbits reports one more "feature":

Finally, Fox will release an Independence Day: Limited Edition on May 11th (SRP $19.98). The release will include both the theatrical and special edition versions in anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, scene specific commentary by Richard Emmerich and Dean Devlin (on the SE version only), an additional commentary by FX supervisors Volker Engel and Doug Smith, and the Inside Look: Day After Tomorrow sizzle reel. It also includes a coupon for a free ticket to see Day After Tomorrow (also directed by Roland Emmerich), which opens in theaters on May 28th.

yeah, Fox missed the gravy train on this one, if they had just thrown a DTS track on it, I would caved in and bought this new version as well.

does the limited in LIMITED EDITION stand for it's limited amount of extras or what?

put the 2-disc set back on the market instead Fox!

Isn't the 2-disc still available? I thought they re-released it with a spine number.

I don't own Independence Day so I'll pick this version up. At least I'll get a free chance to see if Emmerich's Day After Tomorrow is more like ID4 or closer to Godzilla.

Hey, now THAT I'll buy!!!

But really folks, you all are taking this WAY too seriously. This release is obviously for folks who missed the 5-Star Series version.

What pissed me off is I bought my copy and they went out and immediately came out with one with an alternate ending. How many of these are they gonna put out before they say enough's enough?

Well, Roland Emmerich needs all the help he can get. After the failure of Godzilla and Patriot he needs a hit with The Day after Tomorrow.

Um, isn't the new "Limited Edition" the same cut as in the currently available 2-disc set?

There is no reason to double-dip on this one, AFAIK.
