Master and Commander 1 Disc or 2 Discs
Fox is releasing Master and Commander as a single disc with a $29.99 list or 2 disc special edition for $39.99.
I think these are priced way too high for a mainstream movie.
We are not talking Criterion here.

Well, I'd politely tell you to check another source, because I just saw $29.99 and $19.99 for the 2 and 1 disc respectively. This will certainly be a loss leader on release week, so I anticipate $14.99 and $19.99.
EDIT - you must have seen Videoeta.com for those prices. Amazon notes $19.99 for the single disc version.

My information on the list price for the 1 disc and 2 disc sets came from DVD Price Search.
Amazon currently lists the one disc version at $19.49.
This is shown as both list and actual price with no discount.
I suspect this is an error. Amazon usually doesn't sell pre releases
of major motion pictures without some type of discount.
Also $19.49 seems an unusual list price.

the Lion King and Sleeping Beauty were 2 disc sets that were priced at $29.99 and not $39.99.
In the past Fox has released 2 disc sets for $29.99 such as Cast Away, Planet of the Apes ( remake),Fight Club, the Abyss, Sound of Music, Patton etc and then later released a single disc for $19.99. This is the first time I am aware of that they released a single disc and 2 disc set at the same time and at such an advanced price.

OK I see what you're saying now. Just like POTC was listed at $29.99 even though it was a 2-disc SE. I guess you gotta pay $10 extra for the fancy packaging. Universal did the same with the SE for Red Dragon if I'm not mistaken.
Since I don't give a crap about extras I'll just stick with the single disc, assuming it's widescreen. If not that's a pretty crappy ploy to get you to spend extra if you want the widescreen version. Is widescreen now viewed as a special feature?

2 Disc SE, the only way to get WS:
I'm there, and its a blind buy! If not just for the packaging!
From DVDFile:
Lest one think Star Wars is all Fox Home Entertainment has in store for you this year, today sees the announcement of multiple Oscar nominee Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World. This Russell Crowe starrer received ten nods including Best Picture, and will get the deluxe two-disc set treatment on April 20th: anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround tracks, 70'minute "The Hundred Days" documentary, "In The Wake Of O'Brian," "Cinematic Phasmids," "Sound Design Featurette" and "Interactive Sound Recording Demo" featurettes totaling over an hour, the HBO First Look special, six deleted scenes, four multi-angle studies, a split-screen vignette, four art galleries, theatrical trailers and a collectible booklet and packaging. Retail will be $39.95, and Fox will also release a full screen-only, single-disc edition sans extras for $29.95.

from what i understand, there will be 3 versions of it. the widescreen 2-disc deluxe version, and two barebones releases, one widescreen and one fullscreen. that's what amazon has listed anyway, even though most DVD news sites only said there were going to be 2 releases and no barebones widescreen edition.

I remember when FOX first started releasing two-disc special editions and they had this unknown title at the time called Fight Club have an SRP of $34.99. First day of the disc's release in June 2000, I paid $26.99 for it at Target.
I remember also having to pay $39.99 for the two-disc limited edition of Halloween on release date at Tower cause they were the only store in Vegas that carried it other than the stores at the mall.
Oh. Boo hoo. $39.99 for a two-disc edition. It'll be $20 - $25 on release day at Best Buy. Buy it then, enjoy it, and stop complaining.

$39.95 MSRP? LOL!!! I MIGHT pay $40 for my very favorite movie of all time, but then again, probably not. Single disc, thanks. These people must think they're selling gasoline at the pump.

We are not talking Criterion here.
And for those complaining about a $40 msrp, aside from the fact that it will be cheaper almost anywhere you go, you must have missed the laserdisc days when a disc like Master and Commander would have a quarter of the supplements and set you back $125.

Before they stopped taking orders for Master and Commander for whatever reason, I ordered the 2 disc SE (because I endlessly love this movie and a single disc just won't do) off amazon for just $25.99. A few other places have it up for 27.95 so really, that isn't so bad. I mean, the set looks beautiful and comes fully stocked. Gimme, gimme.

I'm not paying extra for a 2-disc set that everyone else sells for $29.95 MSRP. For $40 it should be a 3-disc set minimum, like Black Hawk Down. I'll pick up the movie only disc for $15 at Best Buy when it comes out. That is of course if Fox isn't trying to force us to pay extra for a widescreen version.

I can't believe all the complaining on this site... wow. I am shocked. I for one am extremely excited about the 2disc Master and Commander set. It looks loaded, the movie is fantastic and the packaging is perfect. If you don't like it, don't buy it.
I will certainly be in store on release day buying the 2 discs set...and I won't even gringe at the price.

There are so many resources on the internet to find a cheap price. There's even the Bargains Forum on here to check out. If you buy at MSRP, you have no sympathy from me.
And David is right about the good ol' laserdisc days. Most nice sets were always over $100. People nowadays are just spoiled.
Okay, rant over.... I'll be picking this up blind and I love how the 2-disc set looks. Looks like a nice release.
