I think we're all just spoiled. $29 MSRP = $15 on release day. $39 MSRP = $25-29 on release day. $10 difference is still pretty substantial.

Trust me, there's no bigger Criterion fan than me; they set the standard that I always strive to meet with my discs. But is this really a game about brand names now?

The short answer: people on the board complain about any MSRP above $25 it seems - but they don't with Criterion because they've stuck to the same price model from the start.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film and planned on buying it...but this is an appalling way to release it...FS only for the 1 disc version? BOO FOX!!!@!@!@!!!@@@@!!!!!!!
Boy you said it. This is bullshit. Prices are really getting up there and only foolscreen for the 1 disc version? This exceeds my pain threshold. I may wait for a price drop... on second thought, I'll just add it the the netflix cue and not buy at all. Piss on it.

It will be interesting to see how fast the price drops on the 2-disc version if the film isn't a big winner at the Academy Awards.

Personally, I'm more worried that the studios are trying to raise the price point on new releases and Fox is floating this $39.95 set as a trial balloon... for that reason alone, I'll be passing on this title (until the price drop, that is.)

I'm confident it will get a widescreen single disc release.

I didn't like the film much. . .but I'm going to give it another go this week.

If you like this movie I don't see how anyone WOULDN'T want to get the 2 disk SE. That is the only way to go.

I have no issues with the pricing. Now if they only had the special edition version for 40 dollars, i can see a reason to complain. But it looks like there's a 1 disc widescreen version for cheap... so it's not like you can't afford the movie if you really want it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the B&M price ends up being $27-29 for the 2-disc set considering how Red Dragon was released the same way with the 2-disc set costing $27-$30 on release day.

$30 MSRP for a barebones disc is cheap? Really? That was MSRP for a two disc SE just last year. Now the 2 disc is $40. Prices have taken a definate jump. A big jump. No thanks, I'll pass.

As cheap as every other new release.... a few that have also been fairly barebones. Only here you get the opportunity to see some extras for those who really enjoyed the movie. Does it suck paying a bit more? Sure. But i liked the movie, and from the looks of it the 2 disc set looks awesome. I'll gladly pay extra for it. Besides, i don't see it as a forthcoming trend for DVDs. To me it's no different from paying a premium for a Criterion movie when there's other releases out.

Hell's yeah! Master and Commander was my favorite film from 2003, and the 2-disc super edition looks mighty tasty. I can't wait! True fans of this movie will buy this very gorgeous and magnificient edition, even if the pricing is a bit higher than usual.

After reading Randy Miller III's brilliant review, I'm officially making the 2-disc version a no-brainer blind buy.

I thought I bought a copy of this version the other day, but it turned out to be a boot.

No complaints here. Amazon.ca is selling the two disc version for less than the one disc versions. Picked mine up for $23.69 cdn using a $5.00 coupon.

Ordered mine a few days ago from DVDSoon for $19.10, $24.98 CDN, free shipping. Some people don't like that they charge you when you order, but I've never had a problem with them.

I am so there on the 2-Disc. It's simply an outstanding movie well worth the price (even if I did have to pay the $39.99).

Yeah, but if you're not in Canada isn't that more like $33 CDN after shipping?
