There's also the Japanese film Tetsuo, which is all about a young man struggling to cope with a rare disease while trying to maintain a healthy relationship with his woman.

I'd like to recommend Zombie Holocaust. At the close of WWII, a young nurse tends to a badly-burned plane crash victim. His past is shown in flashbacks, revealing an involvement in a fateful love affair.
