Surprised no one's mentioned the price in DVDFile's posting yet:

Due on April 20th, this Russell Crowe starrer gets the deluxe two-disc set treatment... Retail will be $39.95, and Fox will also release a full screen-only, single-disc edition sans extras for $29.95.
Fox just lost a sale from me on this one. I don't give a damn about the extras, nor am I interested in paying upwards of $30 for the 2-disc set; I would've happily bought the single disc release (sub-$19 retail) but it's full-screen only.

With the seperate 1- and 2-disc releases from Universal and New Line (Red Dragon and Texas Chainsaw, respecitvely) the basic DVDs were at least widescreen.

If the widescreen version of M&C is available as an enrollment from Columbia House at some point, I'll get it, but otherwise I'll have to pass.

Actually, it did do well. It's this close to making 90 million as of this past weekend (89.6 mil to be exact). It'll probably top off around 95 million when all is said and done. I took my parents to go see it this past weekend (my second time), and the show was sold out! People seem to love this film and word of mouth (along with those Oscar nominations) is keeping them coming. BTW, the film has made about 190 million worldwide. But I'm all over this DVD release. You will probably see it for $22.99 (or less) at Best Buy.

Hands over $40 to Fox

It better be around $22 at retail stores though, because in all reality, I fdon't want to hand $40 over for the 2 disc set.

I agree with those who think that $40 for a standard SE is about twice as much as it should be (at least 50% more than the current standard).

Back in 1999 2-disc sets may have been something special, but nowadays even crappy run-of-the-mill releases have two discs, packed with features, for less than $30 MSRP (which means less than $20 in stores).

This set has the same price point as the FOUR disc Lord of the Rings Extended Editions, and the same price as the three disc Black Hawk Down Deluxe Edition.

Folks, for $40* this had better be one hell of a set.

* Yeah, I know Best Buy will have this for $24.99, but still - it should be $15.99.

yeah it's a shame they're pushing this for $39.95 when just about all other 2-disc SEs go for $29.95.... i'll surely buy it anyway.. but many who aren't as big of a fan, and doesn't want fullscreen only probably will skip on this one.

I guess somebody should tell Criterion that.

Criterion's prices vary with demand. Chasing Amy, The Royal Tenenbaums, etc. sell for about what other mainstream discs sell for.

Or do you think that "Master and Commander" is an art film niche title?

I enjoyed the movie, but I haven't been sure if it will be a DVD purchase. But now that I see that picture, it's a sure thing.

Never underestimate the importance of good packaging.

Chasing Amy and The Royal Tenebaums (and Rushmore) sell for "lower" than a regular Criterion title because Buena Vista distributed the discs themselves, not Criterion. Basically it's a Buena Vista DVD with just The Criterion Collection label on top.

Now if Criterion released the discs themselves, then Chasing Amy and
Rushmore
would probably retail $29.99 while Royal Tenenbaums would retail for $39.99. By your comment; Brazil, Do The Right Thing, and Traffic would sell for cheaper too, but they don't as Criterion released those specific editions to DVD themselves and not Universal.

For all we know, DVD File could've made a mistake in the set's price (hell, they've made other mistakes lately like giving Wild Things: Unrated the incorrect running time); but if the set's worth it for an SRP of $39.99, I have no problem buying it, especially when that first week it'll come out for around $22 - $25.

Be thankful we're not paying laserdisc prices here.

Amazon is also listing a widescreen edition of the single-disc too (for those who don't want to spend $5-$10 more on a 2-disc set).

Don't blame the messenger if the message is bad. We post the info the studios give us.

Amazon.com, at current, has stopped taking preorders on the set and has put up a January 1, 2010 release date. Either a glitch in their system or something is getting changed?

Any idea why Peter Weir doesn't do audio commentaries?
He feels it dilutes and interferes with the film. He told me that he's of two minds about the issue. He does get it, and understands why they have value. And we did record one for Master and Commander. But in the end he felt that he would rather address the same subjects in an on-camera format and let the film stand on its own. That's what "In the Wake of O'Brian" is, sort of a guided tour through the filmmaking that covers much of the ground that a commentary would have. Between that and the other 3 hours of original documentaries, I don't think a stone was left unturned.

Ultimately it's his film and this is how he wanted it presented. I don't think anyone can argue with that.

Cheers,

David Prior

Yes, and that's probably my favorite Lebowski quote in your signature.

Try telling that to the Star Wars fans regarding George Lucas and the SE versions of the original trilogy . . .

Back on topic . . . thanks for the insight . . .
