Does anyone here think that this will open the door for Criterion to re-release some of their other non-anamorphic titles with new transfers?
On a side note, I guess I need to try to unload my copy sometime soon. Thanks to the original poster.

Hmm.
I remember a while back, Deepdiscountdvd.com had this listed on the site all of a sudden... many of us put orders in, but the orders were never followed up, as it was "out of stock".
Since I have since bought The Truth About Charlie, and have no wish to rebuy the film, good as it is, I hope I don't wake up one morning with a $35 credit card charge and a copy in my mailbox...

I'd wait for reviews of the disc before purchasing.
This may well be the exact same transfer as the Universal release.
People went ga-ga over the transfer for Fear and Loating in Las Vegas, when in fact it was the same transfer that Universal released a couple years earlier.

a couple things to keep in mind-
when Criterion licences titles, most of the time the studios that own them supply Criterion with the transfers.
that will be the case with Charade, and it is pretty certain that what Criterion will get will be the Transfer used on the WAC disc.
i've heard that this , though it is anamorphic, doesn't actually look as good as the original non-a Criterion.
i think i heard the Criterion looked a lot more vibrant.
maybe Criterion can still tweak it a bit, but it may not be that much better than the old one when all is said and done.
i put mine up last night with a $10 open and a buy it now for $30.
someone bid the $10 so it looks like i'm going to get caught in the deluge with this.
i'll be happy to sell it off and get whatever i can at this point, but i'm gonna be really sore if the new version comes out and and the word is try to track down the original instead.

That's why I'm waiting to get rid of the original until after I've seen some reviews.
And as far as the new release having "all" of the special features of the original, IIRC the original only had a commentary and trailer (good commentary, though). Wouldn't that really be "both"?

A few points to consider:
1. The announcement on Criterion's website says that the re-issue "will feature an all-new 16x9-enhanced high-definition digital transfer." (emphasis added) To me, this means they will NOT be using the same transfer from The Truth About Charlie disc.
2. I don't think Criterion would go through the effort and expense of creating an "all-new" anamorphic transfer for this film if they didn't feel they could surpass both the original (excellent) transfer and that from the The Truth About Charlie disc. Their reputation means too much to them (why would they want to risk pissing off devoted customers who choose to spend another $25-40 to re-purchase this title?)
3. Compare the average bitrates for the original Criterion transfer and that from The Truth About Charlie (from DVD Beaver):
Original Criterion: 7.43 mb/s
The Truth About Charlie: 5.15 mb/s
I don't think Criterion will encode it at a lower bitrate.

I tend to agree with FilmFanSea. There's no guarantee, but I read it the same way he is.
I'll wait and see. If it ends up being at least an equally good transfer AND anamorphic, then I'll upgrade in a heartbeat, and give the old one to my dad. If not, I'll keep it.

Dumped my original one for $750, too much financial temptation to keep it. Think of all the Criterion DVD's I can buy with that! The guy I sold it to tried to sell it again on Ebay, and only got to $760 (and did not meet reserve), Buy It Now was set at $995. I knew it was going to end up a dog. They used to get alot more than $800.

For those who thought we'd never see it ...
From the Criterion website:
Way to go, Criterion!
From the Criterion website:
The new anamorphic re-release of Stanley Donen's Charade will be available on April 6. Collectors who already own the original Criterion release of Charade may wish to hold onto it, as the re-release features minor changes to the menus, packaging, and disc label, in addition to the new film transfer. For those owners of the original Charade interested in purchasing the new edition, Criterion will be offering a $15 discount off the suggested retail price. Watch this space and our homepage news for more details.

and I wish I had more thumbs! Criterion is a fantastic company that never fails to please me. I think they're the greatest company in America.
I wonder why they didn't do this for Beauty and the Beast?

Great news. I wonder how they'll know to issue the discount. Would it involve cutting the UPC code out of the original case or something? That would suck.
In any case, Criterion just consistently proves that they are the #1 DVD producer in the business. What a great company!

How much will this set cost? I know Criterions cost a lot more compared to regular dvds. I ask this because I have never seen this movie and I am really low on cash.
