City of God did not open in a commercial setting until January 2003. It did have special screenings in New York and L.A., though, which means that it *should* be disqualified for Academy considering this year - but since it was passed-over last year, it's nice to see it finally getting some recognition.
As for the ratio, AFAIK this is only being released in a single 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen version.
I'm surprised that they've moved back the release date after having already sent shipments to retailers, so you may get lucky next week.
I'm heading out to the local Walmarts to see if I can catch a copy or two to trade, and see if they've put out more Ed Woods.

The 2-disc region 4 edition looks like a better buy:

No, but they're pretty slow to put things out. I go by there every weekday, so I'll probably check in and see what they put out over the next few days.
And then again next Tuesday, on the release date.

For what it's worth, Deep Discount DVD just put a pre-approval on my credit card this morning, too. I'm not sure if that's standard policy for them X days away from release or what, but I THOUGHT they only did that when they were getting ready to actually ship...

I'm not trying to sound like a moron, or be a jerk. Hope it doesn't sound like that!
I'm just trying to clarify. Thanks again for the reports!Jason

"Out on the floor" means stocked on the shelves and available for customers to purchase (the "floor" being the sales floor - but I could be using very old terminology).
They have a huge back room at Walmart and often have extra stock on hand - but they only get to refreshing that stock every few days.
When Attack of the Clones came out, for instance, you couldn't even buy it at my local Walmart until the Friday after release date. They were supposed to hold it until Tuesday so they wouldn't break street date on such a big title, but then they neglected to put it out even then.
I can't believe they're as successful as they are.

By all means, scour every Walmart. They have no idea what's going on in the ones near me. I picked up Ed Wood there a week before the recall, and have been picking up a few more to trade for OOP Criterions and such. I was hoping to get a Salo for a couple copies during the ridiculous $204 eBay fury, but alas, no takers.

I was kind of shocked to see it for sale today so I picked it up to give it a spin tonight. I wonder if they are planning to just hold this disc as is until June or scrap this release altogether for a bigger package. There is a Miramax "25th Anniversary Award Winning Films" sticker on the front but no mention of Oscar nods, of course. Maybe they are just going to add a new promotional sticker? Who knows? Regardless, I couldn't resist picking it up.

If anyone happens to get an extra copy, I wouldn't mind taking it off of your hands if its a decent price.

jough or onebyone - Was the version you guys got Widescreen? I know in the bargain section someone thought that Wal Mart would only carry a Full Frame version.
If anyone should happen to find one in San Diego please e-mail me (kengartin@*nospam*yahoo.com) or reply in this thread.

There's only one version - and it's anamorphic widescreen.
That may change come June, but right now there's only a single disc.

soooo...can the couple of you who were apparently able to get your hands on a copy help us out and tell us specifically where you got it? I have no interest in selling any on eBay. I'd just like one for myself, without having to pay $81 for it (that's the current price of one on eBay). Thanks!
