You gotta link so I can still sign that? -smile- I promise to do so without whining, but I wish to clarify that it needs to be a bare bones release of the original versions.

At least I've still got my LaserDiscs of the original trilogy, and will be able to burn my own DVD's from them if Lucas sticks to his statement that he will never again release the original versions of those movies.
I know what you mean. But, man, these SE's he releases are going to look and sound so very much better that it would be hard for me to watch laser disc copies of the original --- at least not watch them nearly as often as the SE.

Even though Lucas has said since the last time the OT was released that it would be the last time the OT would be released, it's still a disappointment. Oh well, it looks like I'm off to ebay for the LD's...

Todd, good to see you around here, you finally found the exit on the SH forums? ;)

I am shocked how many of you are surprised (and upset) at this news.

I know they aren't that reliable to some of you, but the Sept. 17th entry from thedigitalbits.com Rumor Mill says

Word is that Lucasfilm is pleased with the format of The Adventures of Indiana Jones: The Complete DVD Movie Collection they're releasing on 10/21 in conjunction with Paramount - so pleased, in fact, that they're planning to use the same format to release the classic Star Wars films. This would presumably mean a 4-disc set, with a disc for each film and a fourth disc of special edition materials for all three films.
So it is not like this idea hasn't been out there already.

My guess is this is just a bone Lucas is throwing out there.

Will he re-release them? Of course. With the history Lucas and Star Wars has, why would this be shocking. I think most have over estimated this release.

Iron_Giant 01-23-04 11:47 AM

I do not need to see the "making of" on the DVD for the 3 movies, I have already sceen them throughout the past 27 years. Just give me the best Video and Sound possible. If he wants to give me an extra disk, I will not complain.

I will get very upset if the 3 movie are just the SE versions, and then he tries to sell us the "Specail Updated Version" as a box set with all 6 movies. That will turn me into a "Lucas Basher", which I have NEVER been in the past.

If he releases the movies 4, 5 and 6 with all of them updated to fit better with the movies 1, 2 and 3, and then add a trailer for movie 3 - what a great marketing tool it would be to get people to buy tickets.

He would not have to spend a dime on advertising if he does it right the 1st time.

Its not like this should be new to everyone...he told you some nearly 10 years ago...

And this is just the first release...expect a 12 disc big ass set in 2006! Probably with new versions that Lucas as been working on...

And dont you people bitch about it being just a 4 disc set! You didnt wanna wait like Lucas did...for 2006 and the big boxset...so the first release is a bit sub-bar...you dont have to buy it...

What happened to all the people who said "We'll buy a barebones now and an SE later...we just want the movies on DVD" Guess those people dont exsist anymore...

I swear...if he releases a boxset now...you think he sucks...if he had waited til 2006 for a big boxset...you'd still think he sucks for the wait...god he just cant win...get over yourselves guys...

Ever...heard...of...a...comma...?...

Meh. I don't like supporting bootleggers.

You guys are all saying how "the SEs are not the true versions".

That is a huge load. I'm fairly certain none of you wrote, directed and produced the movies. George Lucas did. He said many times that the SEs were what he wanted the films to be if he had the resources and technology to do them.

The added footage is neccessary to fill in what would be GLARING PLOT HOLES in Pts. 4-6 if Pt. 1-3 would be cogent. Lucas did what he felt he needed to do to make a nine part story flow and not contradict itself (which I'm sure it probably still does to some extent).

The "original trilogy" nonsense is fanboy extremism. Accept the fact that the SEs are Lucas' true vision BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT HE TOLD YOU AND HE IS A FAR BETTER AUTHORITY THAN YOU ARE.

Just because it's not exactly as you remember it doesn't make it any less authoritative.

Whatever guys...I was just stating my opinion on the matter...Lucas will never please you fans...because I think deep down you want something to rant about...lets off steam I guess...my advice...buy a punching bag and stop using Lucas!

Yeah!
Can't wait for the next round of touch ups!

I'm not a huge Star Wars fanboy, but I like the films enough that I purchased the "Five Star Collection" boots over a year ago. I'm happy with them, even though they aren't pristine and they are the SE versions. Because the rumored upcoming release may be only the old SE versions that I already own, I'll probably pass on the official release.

I've read the long list of (again) rumored possible changes to the films to create a final Super Special Edition. Most of the changes seem pretty cool and I'd definitely want to see the final version that Lucas creates (including reinstating "Han shoots first"). However, I also would like to have the original versions of the films.

Others have mentioned that the Alien Quadrilogy should be a model for the Star Wars release and I agree. I would definitely purchase a huge box set with both the original films and the "Super Special Edition" versions. However, if this release is only going to be the 1997 SEs, I'll probably just keep my boots for the time being.

Josh H 01-23-04 12:25 PM

I'll buy this in a heart beat.

Fine go ahead and support bootleggers, who make money on other people's work.

A lot of people in this forum said they own the bootleg editions but would buy once an official release comes out. I guess we will really see

I DON'T REALLY CARE ABOUT 1-3.

Call me a fanboy all you want, THERE'S A COUPLE OF CHANGES HE MADE IN THE SE'S (one in SW, one in ESB) THAT DO NOTHING TO IMPROVE THE STORY LINE OR CHARACTERIZATIONS. Quite the opposite, in fact. Plus the fact that the Greedo scene just looks like ass now.

If you really have a problem with the fact that I'd rather own LDs of the OT than DVDs of the SE, then I don't know what to tell you.

In a lot of cases bootleggers give you stuff that isn't being given officially. Good examples are Star Wars OT non-SE and Song of the South DVDs. With things like these, bootleggers deserve both honor and support.

Not really, but I see where they fill an economic demand.

QuiGonJosh 01-23-04 12:48 PM

Some people just dont get that Ep4-6 arent meant to be viewed alone...their meant to be viewed with Ep1-3 as a 6 part film...

RocShemp 01-23-04 12:49 PM

I'd just like to clarify that my reluctance to purchase these is not due to the whole SE/OT issue. Though I have my gripes with the SE versions, they weren't enough to discourage me from purchasing the VHS tapes when first released.

I was simply expecting something grander with this much anticipated release and can't shake the feeling that something much better is on the way and this first release is to satisfy those that just want the movies already. Plus, aside from Episode III, I haven't been giving Star Wars much thought lately so this makes it no big deal to keep waiting.

Of course, once this release is available, I may find myself eating my words as I purchase the set (it's happened before).

Of course, when Lord of the Rings does double dipping, it is perfectly OK. There is no difference here between the two, except that there has been no official word on another expanded version after Ep.3, but we all know it will be happening in some form or another.

The official release does make a difference, so I see where people are coming from.

When the studio is announcing it, it shows they care about the fans.

When they don't, and put out a better release later, it makes them look greedy.

I don't care personally, I've wanted SW since I got a DVD player (refuse to support bootleggers) so I'll by this if it does come out and rebuy if a new version with added footage comes out (don't care about getting the originals or more extras, new cuts of the films are all I'd double dip for).

Why do you bring up LOTR? Yes I purchased both the EEs and the theatricals but had the differences not been substantial enough (both the films AND the additional content) I would have merely purchased the EE releases. As for Star Wars, I doubt we'll be getting two substantially divergent releases but rather an updated (or several updated) version(s) of this later on. So I'll wait. If/when another release becomes available and I see enough reason for owning both I'll gladly purchase them.

They care for fans? I guess they only care about their wallet. Its pretty funny how this stuff works, Lucas has said the films will be released after the 6 movies are done. From all indications, nothing has changed with this release.

So LOTR can do the exact same thing (theaterical version) then an expanded edition but when Lucas decides to do it, he gots bashed to holy hell and people invoke their god given right to bootleg the movies.

FYI: Most people that have bought these boots (Five Star, etc) have not been buying the original versions. They all have been the SEs.
