Well said, Dr. DVD!
|
I will just live with my laser disc and eventual dvd copies of them. they have 5.1 sound and are the original versions so no reason to buy the SE's.
I am glad he decided to release the dvd's. Too bad he left out the original versions. |
Originally posted by jough Actually, I really enjoy "Attack of the Clones" and think it's now my second favourite SW film after Empire. The Phantom Edit is also very good. It just goes to show that there was a good 50 minute movie hidden under all of that muck. I'm very much looking forward to Episode III, and hope hope hope that it doesn't suck. The AOTC is just terrible IMO, the Jedi seem like morons, they appeared clueless to everything bad going on around them, the out of know where romance from Anakin and Padme wasn't believable at all. The movie suffers from a bad (almost goofy) climatic battle on Geonosis and a really dull saber battle between Anakin, Obi and Dooku. I will also say that the Yoda vs. Dooku battle was absolutely ridiculous...watching Yoda jump from wall to ceiling and landing in karate stand was an abomination, it did make me laugh though :-). I rate them the following... 1. The Empire Strikes Back 2. A New Hope 3. Return Of The Jedi 4. The Phantom Menace 5. Attack Of The Clones |
Originally posted by whaaat I'd be scared to show my kids the movies in order Ep 1-6, for fear they'd refuse to continue watching after the wretched Ep. 1. But it didnt. It was still pulling in good money towards the end of the summer (and beyond with the christmas re-release later in the year). There are a lot of Star Wars geeks - but not that many. |
Originally posted by Qui Gon Jim While none of the changes in the SEs bug me that much, I would make a few changes... ANH: Greedo shoots first- just because it looks sort of cheesy. Omit Jabba meeting Han. This was a wise editing choice back in 77. I like all the other changes to this film. They should repair the effects on the lightsabers to make them match the other 4 (5) films. ESB: i can't think of one change I would undo here. Maybe get Hammill to loop his scream. I love the enhancements to Bespin and the repaired mattes on Hoth. ROTJ: I love the new ending. I also like the musical number too. I liked the originals too though. Sarlaac beak could come or go AFAIAC. So really the only things that bug me are Jabba and Greedo, and they don't really detract from my enjoyment of this series. I think that it is fashionable for movie snobs to bash on the SE and PT. Ho hum. Move on. But my not wanting to buy this set is not to bash the SE or the PT. If that were the case, I'd never have bought the SE VHS tapes nor would I have EpI on VHS and DVD and EpII on DVD. Some here have mentioned that this is proably Lucas' attempt to appease the fans that stated that they were willing to buy a practically barebones release of the OT now and a special edition or collector's edition (or whatever other name 2 disc sets go by now) later. The fact is I'm not now, nor ever was, one of those people. I want the definitive release and am willing to wait for one. Of course, if this is released at a reasonable price (a la Indy Trilogy) I will gladly eat my words and purchase this set. I may be patient but am not so patient to ignore a good deal when I see one. |
Star Wars trilogy finally comes out on DVD... hmmmmm, wonder why it took so d@mn long.
Ego? Arrogance? I would agree to both. I know there are alot of Star Wars fans out there, but I, for one, WILL NOT and WILL NEVER purchase or rent a Lucas DVD. For the fans' sake (I'm definitely not included), the DVDs better have the best audio soundtrack and the best picture of any movie(s) ever released on this format. I am so happy that LOTR did so well. The geniuses behind this trilogy and how things were handled did it right. They did it for themselves AND the fans. Lucas & Spielberg DO NOT understand that. Such a shame. End of story. Have a great weekend everybody! |
Well, I for one will not be buying it. I would sacrifice all the extras for a barebones set containing the original prints over any set that has extras but only includes the severely misguided SE's that were the beginning of the end of STAR WARS.
|
I'm personally not really bothered by the SE's. Of course, I think the original versions of every movie should always be made available, but at the end of the day, the only thing I really have a problem with in the SE's is Greedo shooting first. I don't think any of the other additions really tarnished the movies, I actually think they enhanced them (well, Jabba looked like crap, but they could update that scene using today's technology, and it's not as if they replaced a superior-looking Jabba like my next example). Now, on the other hand, I can't stand the 20th Anniversary Edition of "E.T. The Extra Terrestrial". I guess the difference is that with "E.T.", the central character was changed into a cartoon, whereas the "Star Wars" changes dealt with inanimate objects for the most part. Anyways, I DO think that the original versions should be available, and George Lucas is only losing money since I would gladly buy both sets if they were seperate or a deluxe set including both versions.

btw...there's a thread in "international" that DVDSOON has the set up for pre-order. They say it will be 6 discs.
And FYI, for those that doubt their credibility, they had the Quadrilogy up way before as well. |

Originally posted by Kal Jedi Just when you think threadcrappers have exhausted all methods of pitting LOTR vs Star Wars or Jackson vs Lucas/Spielberg, you're proven wrong. I just can't get past the fact that it has taken this long. I just hope you all will be satisfied when the first round of discs appear, considering the amount of time it's taken for the DVDs to surface. Take care all. |

And I thought that was them who had the Alien Quad up, but I couldn't remember, and I didn't know where to begin to search. |
So we're either getting an Indy-type 4-disk set or a Prequel-type 2-disc-each boxset...I wish they would announce this already...

Thanks for the info. Thank god for the Definitive Collection LDs.
I think I'll start watching them in this order: 5 3 2 6 4 1 Definitely the best route. BTW, is there anything else to talk about? SW has been overdiscussed for 26 years. I think everything's already been said. Maybe we could all just switch to LOTR and decry Jackson for the next 26 years for not managing to include Tom Bombadil in FOTR. |
Well 6 discs would indicate 2 discs per movie?

Originally posted by chanster Well 6 discs would indicate 2 discs per movie? This thread and the post to which it refers is the only place on the 'net where I've seen a mention of a 4-disc set, a la the Adventures of Indiana Jones. So we'll just have to wait and see. I think a 6-disc set would be better, of course, and maybe LucasFilm is putting out the two rumours to see what feedback is like. |
Well, I'm of the school of thought that the SE's aren't the original trilogy.
So, I'll pass on this set. |
Ive never seen the originals, just the SEs. I want the SEs released. I think Im the only one. :o
|
I want whatever version is approved by George...which is the SE...

Theforce.net has updated saying we're to get an official announcement on these next Tuesday (Feb 10). Does seem early for a fall release, but I think these titles are worthy of an exception.
They mention it's a four disc set, and the SEs. Let's see what happens. |
Yeah, what milo bloom said.
We've received information from a reliable source that an official announcement regarding the much rumored Trilogy DVD is expected soon. Our source says next Tuesday (2/10) will bring official word that the Special Edition versions of Star Wars: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return Of The Jedi will be released in a four disk set on September 21 of this year. No mention was made of additional footage, or the contents of the fourth disk, but more information will likely be known next week. |
