Universal has the rights to this movie. It was one of there titles that was origionally distributed by Image, but has reverted back to Universal. They have already re-released most of the older Image titles (Prince of Darkness, They Live, Fahrenheit 451) but Flash is still MIA.
France recently released a killer SE that is now anamorphic and a DTS soundtrack. Its a 2 discer and includes a CD soundtrack.
Universal sucks in my book now, so I dont expect anything like they did in France. We will be grateful just to get a bare-bones release.
There are still copies of the old Image release, if you just have to have it and dont care about pic or sound. You have to go to E-bay though, it out of print, so expect to pay $50.
Im still waiting to get an Ultimate Edition of "The Thing", I'll probably get the origional Star Wars before that, Universal is sad. I wish they would pay me to design their DVD's. They would have the best on the market, again.

And the commentary for the French CE won't be ported over either, as Director Hodges recorded it at the height of the pre-Iraq invasion hype, and it features some "comments" about Bush that Uni execs in America most likely will not allow.
No big whoop, really, since Hodges can barey remember his own film. There are some nuggets in the track, but I'm praying the US release can improve on what the French bravely tried to do with this personally beloved film.

Which, unfortunately, has forced subtitles. Some people have been able to remove 'em. I can't.

that, I don't know. I borrowed speedy1961's copy, and after trying [and failing] to get rid of the subs on my player, turned it off before further depressing myself..
Perhaps he'll chime in and let us know..

I have the French SE and can indeed remove the subs. The only reason I can though is because I am playing it in my computer and outputting component progressive to my HDTV. There is a great little proggie called Remote Selector that will (among other things) allow you to enable all user prohibited actions in a DVD.
That is one of the reasons I settled on the Xcard instead of a Malata. Perfect PAL to NTSC progressive anamorphic output and some killer third party software to drive it. (JovePlayer from www.8dim.com)

This movie was fun, although it was a very campy treatment of the source material. I'd like to see a movie that takes it seriously.
Still, the 1980 Flash deserves a decent DVD edition.

I seriously doubt they'll bother to remaster the video on this without remastering the audio.
Unfortunately, we that love this movie are really in the minority.
No one is going to make plans about a little fish like Flash Gordon all the way out to Q4 05 unless there is a remake afoot that I haven't heard about.
