Flash Gordon Re- Release???

Anybody here hear anything about a Flash Gordon re-release? Maybe in a 2 disc Collector's Edition?

Thanks

Pete

I was just thinking about this film the other day. This film deserves a new dvd with a new transfer and audio remaster. Who owns the rights to this film?

theDVDfreak 01-22-04 10:22 AM

Universal has the rights to this movie. It was one of there titles that was origionally distributed by Image, but has reverted back to Universal. They have already re-released most of the older Image titles (Prince of Darkness, They Live, Fahrenheit 451) but Flash is still MIA.

France recently released a killer SE that is now anamorphic and a DTS soundtrack. Its a 2 discer and includes a CD soundtrack.

Universal sucks in my book now, so I dont expect anything like they did in France. We will be grateful just to get a bare-bones release.

There are still copies of the old Image release, if you just have to have it and dont care about pic or sound. You have to go to E-bay though, it out of print, so expect to pay $50.

Im still waiting to get an Ultimate Edition of "The Thing", I'll probably get the origional Star Wars before that, Universal is sad. I wish they would pay me to design their DVD's. They would have the best on the market, again.

And the commentary for the French CE won't be ported over either, as Director Hodges recorded it at the height of the pre-Iraq invasion hype, and it features some "comments" about Bush that Uni execs in America most likely will not allow.

No big whoop, really, since Hodges can barey remember his own film. There are some nuggets in the track, but I'm praying the US release can improve on what the French bravely tried to do with this personally beloved film.

Which, unfortunately, has forced subtitles. Some people have been able to remove 'em. I can't. :(

Check it out HERE..

It would be awesome if this movie was released in it's full glory, hopefully it will be out before we all die.

chente 01-22-04 03:03 PM

I'd snatch this up in a sec!

whotony 01-22-04 05:11 PM

i just watched my copy the other day.

it doesnt say in that thread that anyone was able to remove the subs.
someone does mention you may be able to with a dif player then the malalta.

Breezy_Pete1 01-22-04 06:45 PM

Rogue

Are the commentaries also in french?

Pete

Rogue588 01-22-04 08:13 PM

that, I don't know. I borrowed speedy1961's copy, and after trying [and failing] to get rid of the subs on my player, turned it off before further depressing myself..

Perhaps he'll chime in and let us know..

Flash Gordon is an all-time favorite of mine, so I'd love to see an SE released.

Snowmaker 01-22-04 08:51 PM

I've got the OOP version. I think I've watched it once. I probably don't need to upgrade, unless there's LOTS of bonus stuff.

Rammsteinfan 01-22-04 09:14 PM

I have the OOP too but I want a full blown SE on this film! I want Anamorphic, 5.1 remix!

HyPyke 01-22-04 10:54 PM

I have the French SE and can indeed remove the subs. The only reason I can though is because I am playing it in my computer and outputting component progressive to my HDTV. There is a great little proggie called Remote Selector that will (among other things) allow you to enable all user prohibited actions in a DVD.

That is one of the reasons I settled on the Xcard instead of a Malata. Perfect PAL to NTSC progressive anamorphic output and some killer third party software to drive it. (JovePlayer from www.8dim.com)

I'd even buy a bare-bones release if they remaster it. I own the original release and it just looks like hell.

DrOBoogie1 01-23-04 02:41 PM

This movie was fun, although it was a very campy treatment of the source material. I'd like to see a movie that takes it seriously.

Still, the 1980 Flash deserves a decent DVD edition.

I am also able to remove them, but it is a pain in the neck. I have an APEX 3201. To remove them you have to go into the players preferences and eliminate them from there. You can't do it from the remote during play. Sometimes it takes a few tries before it takes. Also, if you stop the movie, you have to take the disc in and out to make it work again. On the bright side, the movie looks and sounds great and the packaging is unique. I paid about $32 for it, but was planning to buy the soundtrack anyway, so it worked out well for me.

Nierfacon 01-25-04 05:47 AM

So what's the word on a special edition? Any?

I'm lucky enough to have the old version, but it's definately not real spiffy.

ckolchak 01-25-04 09:10 AM

(whispering) a little bird told me Sept '04 for R1.
no SE, but anamorphic.

and you didn't hear that from me.

No SE? No 2-disc Collector's Edition? &nbsp Just an anamorphic transfer and that's it?

I'll take it.

tacomantt 01-25-04 05:28 PM

A little bird told me no earlier than fourth quarter '05. Single disc SE. Original sound w/ a new 16:9 transfer.

Breezy_Pete1 01-26-04 10:30 AM

Where do these "little birds" live?

Thanks guys for the information.

:D

sicklerice 01-26-04 11:32 AM

I seriously doubt they'll bother to remaster the video on this without remastering the audio.

Unfortunately, we that love this movie are really in the minority.

No one is going to make plans about a little fish like Flash Gordon all the way out to Q4 05 unless there is a remake afoot that I haven't heard about.
