Hey kids,

I'll post my list later.

If no one else wants to do it, I'll take up the gauntlet. I don't know about posting the list elsewhere, but if someone wants to start the thread on another DVD/HT forum they frequent and then send me a link, I'll include the results as long as the lists are generated by the same criteria.

I'm sure finding interested parties on the Home Theatre Forum, at the very least, won't be difficult.

Please feel free to post comments along with your lists. I'll probably not style the results exactly like LBPound did, but I'll be sure to include some comments with the results as well.

Let's make the deadline January 31st 2004 (that's three weeks from today). And please only one list per person.

I'll add the results to a database and tally as we go. Expect the results to be posted two weeks after the end date.

My Tallying Criteria

* I will count all versions of the same film to be a single vote entry unless the gift set version of a film is significantly different than the standard release (as was the case with E.T., or the Alien Quadrilogy containing an extra disc of extras). Usually, as is the case with the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions, their gift sets contain the same basic disc sets with some added bonuses.

* As with LBPound's system, your #1 will get 10 points, #2 will get 9, etc. If you post more than 10 items I'll only tally the first ten. I'll count them in the order you list them, even if you list them alphabetically.

* This is a region 1 list, although if you feel strongly about another region release you must specify the region. It will be treated as a wholly separate release, then.

* No differentiation will be made between multiple widescreen or pan & scan versions unless the extras and other presentation is significantly different.

* If you don't specify the season of a television set, your vote is cast for the first season or volume release of that series.

Any other suggestions? This is my first time doing this, so please be gentle.

My Personal Choices for the Top 10 DVDs of All Time

No commentary, since I will be writing commentary for the entire 100 Best list.

1) The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: Extended Edition
2) The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: Extended Edition
3) The Adventures of Antoine Doinel: Criterion Collection (Boxed Set)
4) Toy Story: The Ultimate Toy Box
5) Band of Brothers
6) 8 1/2: Criterion Collection
7) Adventures of Indiana Jones: Boxed Set
8) E.T.: Ultimate Gift Set
9) West Side Story: 2 Disc Special Edition
10) Se7en: 2 Disc Platinum Series

No runners-up list this year, except to agree with nearly all of the choices on others' lists that did not appear on mine.

*** ALL OF THE LISTS HAVE BEEN TALLIED SO FAR ***

As of this post there are 154 different titles.

I wouldn't want to skew the results by saying which discs are ahead, although it may be obvious.

There's still plenty of time to cast your vote!

Thanks to jough for taking up the challenge!

1. Fellowship of the Ring - it was THE first one, so it set the standard. Towers just followed behind it.

2. Toy Story Ultimate Toy Box - Pixar knows their shit, and this is the epitome of it.

3. Star Wars Episode 1 : The Phantom Menace - Say what you will about the movie, this DVD was great. "The Beginning" is one of the best making of's out there.

4. Superman: The Movie SE - totally underrated, and often overlooked. Great movie, great picture, great sound, superb special features=Super DVD.

5. Indiana Jones Box Set - self explanatory

6. Back to the Future Trilogy - see #5

7. Se7en Platinum - Awesome DVD of a Great movie.

8. Snow White Platinum Series - Disney's first, Disney's best.

9. Sound of Music 5-Star - Another often overlooked title. One of the Classic greats with a splendid restoration and a very well produced featurette.

10. Alias Season Box Set - one of the best TV shows is given one of the best DVD presentations.

Unless vastly different from the other sets in the series, I suggest clumping together all seasons of a particular TV show. If not, our votes will be spread too thin - even with very popular shows.

01. Alien Quadrilogy
02. Lord of the Rings: Fellowship EE
03. BTTF: Trilogy
04. Sopranos: Season 2
05. Lord of the Rings: Two Towers EE
06. Boogie Nights (2-disc Platinum)
07. Fight Club (2-disc)
08. Unforgiven: SE (2-disc)
09. Rushmore (Criterion)
10. Mr. Show: Season 3

So far it hasn't been an issue, but since we're looking at single DVD releases it makes sense to list each series set separately.

Surely one must rank higher on your list than another - either for better episodes, video/transfer quality, extras, etc.

I mean, why lump together the Sopranos sets but not the Lord of the Rings sets? Or the Star Wars Episodes?

  1. Sunrise (Fox Studio Classics)

  2. 8 1/2 (Criterion)

  3. In the Mood For Love (Édition 2 - R2)
  4. Contempt (Criterion)

  5. Citizen Kane (Warner Home Video)

  6. Tokyo Story (Criterion)

  7. Vertigo (Universal Studios)

  8. Rosetta/La Promesse (Artificial Eye - R2)

  9. Carl Dreyer Box Set - Day of Wrath/Ordet/Gertrud/My Metier (Criterion)

  10. Singin' In the Rain (Warner Home Video)

Notes:While the Criterion In the Mood For Love is a great release, the French R2 release is even better, believe it or not.

Rosetta and La Promesse are available in the same release. Rosetta, one of the greatest films ever made and a winner of the Palme d'Or, is not available in R1.

Hmm, what makes the R2 In the Mood for Love better than the Criterion release in your opinion? Haven't seen the R2 but the CC would be pretty hard to top I think.

Sorry, no ties. Vertigo was bumped off of your list.

And people, please number your lists. It makes my job a lot easier.

The Criterion version is cropped, and the R2 version has more extras. Criterion crop a lot of their releases, sad to say.

It may be too late, but I'd like to special request that we only include feature films in this Top Picks List. Television is a whole different breed of DVD; multiple seasons, 6 disc box sets, etc. There are so many other factors when judging a television show that I don't think the comparison is even possible, let alone appropriate. Do a second survey for Television series.
