forgot this one-
if you expand the category to include non R1 discs- Flash Gordon the French CE is one of the most beautiful and stylish 2 discs sets i've ever seen.
it has a unique slipcase that is split in half and contains a very colorful digipak inside.
very nice.

Great call!

Also the Naked Lunch Criterion is a damn nice looking keepcase release.

Warner's on-going use of original poster art on most of their classic releases has been wonderful.

The packaging for the Rocky & Bullwinkle Season 1 set is great too.... it's funny to open up the package and to be greeted by "Hello, low IQ-ers!"

TDirectors Series (Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham, Michael Gondry) from Palm Pictures is terrific.

What about Speed Racer. For a gimmick release, the rubber tire cover looks pretty cool.

The worst packaging by far is the Alien Quad. What brainiac thought it would be a good idea to have a 9 disk fold out. Unfolded, the set is almost 6 feet long. On top of that, the little dots of glue holding the clear plastic cases onto the cardboard dont stick to anything. The packaging is really a downer in an otherwise great set.

I loved the Aleins box set untill I opened it.

My Fav would have to be Scarface and the Indy box set.

Either Criterion's Truffaut box, or their Fassbinder box. Both have excellent artwork, with really nice (over 50 pages) booklets. And each dvd is in it's own slim little case with appropriate info and art.

Any boxed set that uses the thinpack cases (i.e. Family Guy, Futurama, The Kids in the Hall, Twilight Zone Collections).

I just got these and I must give a big to you for mentioning them. How many other companies would produce a double disc case on a single disc release just so they can include a 52-page booklet ?

I myself loved the complete sets of The Monkees. Very retro.

Something without the word "Quadrilogy" on it would be even better yet.

Indy, it is just great to have all 3 on my shelf - I still would have voted it #1 even if it came in a clear DVD box.

just a note that the Battlestar Galactica Cylon may be going away:

The Digital Bits:

"Speaking of Universal, we've learned that the studio will re-issue Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Epic Series on 2/10 in new packaging. It looks as if the inner digipak packaging will now be contained in a smaller slipcase or box that actually fits on your video shelf, rather than the oversized "Cylon helmet" box that's available in stores now. There's no word on whether or not the new issue will include a smaller version of the booklet in the current box. We'll post a look at the new packaging as soon as it's available."
