I saw a screening of ROTK a week before it came out in theaters at the Writers Guild and after the screening the Art Director, Production Designer and Visual Effects Supervisor gave a talk with some Q&A. One of the things mentioned by the Visual Effects Supervisor (Jim Rygiel) was that they had already done over 2,000 special effects shots for ROTK, but that only about 1450 of them made it into the theatrical cut, so he said we might expect another 600 SE shots in the EE. They all also said that it was great now to only have to be working on the EE DVD instead of doing that as well as finishing a movie at the same time, so the workload was easier, but they made no mention whatsoever of anything being any different for the ROTK EE DVD than had been for the first two movies. That's what I heard right from the horse's mouth, as it were, and that was back on December 8th, for what it's worth.

First it is in Digital Bits rumor mill and to quote the article:
We can't vouch for the validity of the rumor
and
We'll look into this and try to find out if it's really something the studio is considering. If it's true, someone's gonna get an earful from us.

I just want them to use seamless branching to allow the alternate ending where Frodo fails and Sauron destroys Middle Earth while Smeagol has that weird "Deliverance" scene with Samwise Gamgee.

Nothing clear yet on the release date, let alone the disc specs for the third installment of The Lord of the Rings, however since both previous films had Extended Editions released on DVD it is fair to assume this will happen again, especially after it is rumoured Peter Jackson said the following at the Copenhagen premiere. Basically he commented that the first cut of Return of the King had a running time of four hours and fifty minutes. When asked why this was too long for theatres but acceptable for DVD, he said:

"It is different with the DVD version. People watch it at home. They can lay on the couch or spread the experience over two or three nights. That is the amazing thing with DVD. It gives a whole new dynamic and I can assure you that the DVD version of Return of the King will be longer than 4 hours and 50 min."

Unless any of our Danish readers have can confirm this then it is still rumour, however if true, this really is interesting news.

My note: Also note that Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf) appeared on Jonathan Ross Friday night, and he said that the Extended Edition would be over five hours long.
The site goes on to say that the info can not be confirmed. But... Over 5 hours?!?

Don't remember where I read it, but the reporter corrected his facts. PJ said 4:15, not 4:50....

Given all this talk of 4.5 hours or more of video plus commentaries plus multiple soundtracks on these two DVDs, I'm wondering if the video and/or audio quality will suffer because of extra compression. The compression on The Two Towers was higher than FotR and that resulted in slightly lower video quality. Something to think about.

If the EE will be that long, maybe they can release a 5-disc box set. All I'm going to say is bring it on!

Let's not forget that 30 minutes of that time will be the list of LOTR fan club members...

I think the video quality was higher on Two Towers; I didn't see one single compression artifact on it.

I'm sure they will do what they can to keep Return of the King on two discs because I bet they want all three boxes of each movie to be of equal size and width, etc. just for the sake of consistency and look.

Each movie could have been 5 hours long and I wouldn't have cared.
I have been playing the Lord of the Rings: Return of the King for the Xbox video game. There have been several scenes from the movie as you beat each level. After I used Gandalf to clear the Top of the Wall at Minas Tirith the scenes from the movie seem to show the city being bombed with fireballs from a catapult at NIGHT!! Gandalf can be seen riding his horse around the city at night with the fireballs coming down. I don't remember this from the movie at all. This might indicate that the battle of Minis Tirath was much longer than it appeared on the screen. I also wonder if they will show the fate of Saruman in the Shire. There were several spots in the movie where I felt something was left out or cut. I can't wait for the EE!!

I've heard 4:15 as well. That would be 47 extra minutes. Still a lot.

What I'm about to say shouldn't be considered a spoiler since it's not in the movie but anyway.......

The Scouring of the Shire from the end of the Return of the King book wasn't filmed at all for the movie version. There will be a 7 minute scene in ROTK: EE for Saruman. It will be when Gandalf and co. went to Isengard near the beginning of the movie. I would imagine they will show
Spoiler:
Grima killing Saruman
in that scene as well even though it differs from the book. If you want a better idea of what will happen in that scene go look up "The voice of Saruman" on Yahoo.
