I don't look at it as bragging. I enjoy reading what others get and I've bought some great movies I wouldn't have known about if it weren't for folks here recommending them. Come on...it's the holidays, lets not argue.

I'm thankful for those I've listened to, as well. RichDB10, Pro-bassoonist, Jhonny Zhivago, TomOpus and RobCA(dont mean to leave anyone out!) are just a few members that have turned me on to cool films and releases and so have many other people. many times it's through the collection links they may provide or just a quick post in an interesting thread. my library is filled with many great titles...thanks to suggestions or feedback I'm given.

ok...I'm done. back to topic. I still dont buy used dvds.

I won't taint my collection with new ones. Almost everything I buy is used.

Yeah, I remember seeing that story told a lot better in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

As I've noted in the many threads like this that have come up, I buy a lot of used discs. I've found many bargains, and a few OOP discs too (Silence of the lambs Criterion, Swamp Thing). I know I could probably do the CH thing, but I'm lazy, and I like the instant gratification and it's quite frankly more fun digging thru the hundreds of copies of Zoolander and The Dentist to find that one gem.

Check my DVDAF collection, I've noted all my used discs.

Over half of my DVDs, I've purchased used. And why not? They're guaranteed to be 100% fine and I save a bundle. Plus I support my local indie used-CD/DVD store. It's all good kids, buy new if that spins your pasties. I'm cool with used DVDs though.

I've bought almost 600 used almost 600 new. I've only used I've ever had problems with is from Blockbuster and I returned those. I've had more problems with new disc than I've had with used. I'm fairly picky and what every disc I own to look good with all inserts, etc., but the more I save the more I can put into my collection.

I like to buy used when I get great deals on discs that are in good condition (especially if they are OOP or high-priced sets.) Most recently, I picked up SotL CC, the two WC Fields CCs and Terror Firmer for ~$55, and Army of Darkness LE, 2 more Criterions, and The Honeymooners Classic 39 Episodes for ~$80...

I have found several OOP/LE discs, high-priced sets (Criterions, Disney's Ultimate Editions, etc.) and box sets for very good prices. I picked up ST:TNG season 1 and 4 for about $45 each, when CD Warehouse was closing their stores. When I was at Wherehouse music getting the AOD LE and stuff, I saw ST:TNG seasons 1, 2, and 3 for about 62 each, so I could have picked up a 4th set of something for free (buy 3 used, get 1 free.)

I don't buy a lot of generic mainstream stuff used, since the prices aren't usually as good, and it will be easily available new or used for some time. If I found a bunch of stuff in great shape for $3-5 each, I might pick up a few, but I mostly look for the harder-to-find/more expensive items.

Ditto . . . gut helped to convince me to buy The Last Temptation Of Christ Criterion. Of course it hasn't arrived yet (backordered at DDD) so I haven't had a chance to watch it and see if his advice was any good, but I still appreciated the effort.

So be nice . . . gut's good people . . .

. . . apperantly, however, we do seem to have a difference of opinion on used DVD's. I'll buy used OOP's and higher ticket items off of eBay, for one main reason . . . there are a ton of people who sell them "opened, but never viewed" or "only viewed once". Find a seller with a good feedback rating and a DVD described like this, and you are all but buying it new. I don't see any reason not to do it. Of course, I haven't been burnt yet either, so that helps.

The majority of my collection is used. I buy from pawn shops all the time and have found some great deals. You have to be discerning and check them carefully, but if you're on a limited income, like I am, then they're a great source. Of course, more and more people are discovering this, which kind of sucks for me. For someone to say thy won't "taint" their collection with used dvds seems silly to me, but to each his own I guess. Personally, I enjoy finding a great deal. Oftentimes, it'll be a bust, but then I'll hit something special and it makes up for it.

Some of the best deals I've gotten:

Back to the Future collection, mint: $6
X-Files, season one, good: $10
Pulp Fiction SE and Jackie Brown SE, both mint: $6 each
Silence of the Lambs, Criterion, good: $6

Why not buy used? I'm a huge fan of movies and I buy tons. I have somewhere in the ball park of 2,000. I've found a few OOP gems used from time to time. Some I kept and some I resold for a profit (didn't think they were worth keeping). I've even found a few movies I would have missed (usually from buy so many get one free deals).

Why not buy used, if you can buy 3 used movies for the price of one new one and you like movies then why not?

I've picked up a few things used, but I also go to the library and check movies out for a week, that way I can decide if it's worth repeat viewings and if I'd like to own it. If I think it's something I'd own, I'll keep an eye out for it used, but only if the disc is in good condition and I can get it cheap.

I just don't understand you people's obsession with DVD packaging and some of you people's aversion to buying used discs.

I don't understand whether a disc being used or not can affect the enjoyment of a film.

"Gee this is a great film, but the disc in my player is USED and the title of the film on the cover is spelled with an ugly font, so I must learn to hate it!!!"

wow! just wow!

Content of good quality? Check.
DVD clean and plays? Check.

Enough for me.

I have never really bought used DVDs because the prices I found were equal to buying new on first week release pricing.

But recently, with the new Blockbuster trade in offer, people are bringing in their once-watched DVDs to get new ones at a lower price. A few days ago I bought my first USED disc from Blockbuster. It was FANTASIA, complete and mint, which I bought for only $10 and it felt friggin' GREAT!!

"No God no! Now my DVD collection is tainted!!"

I don't really care if the DVD is used as long as the case/artwork/DVD are in good shape. Reason being, I am always selling DVDs to get my collection where I would like it to be, so I want everything in good shape so I can get my money back or more.

I would buy used if I could get three used for the price of one new, but I can't. Most new releases are $14.99-$15.99 the week they are released. If I could find used for $5 I'd hop on them, but most of the used discs in my area are $10-$15 each. I stopped into two pawn shops and they both wanted $13 and $15 for their DVDs. All they had were $5.88 @ Walmart stuff. (I realise that I could haggle with them but not for the crap that they had.)

I'll stick with CH and get new DVDs at near-used prices.

I've lost count. Of my 400, I'd say about 125 of them were used

Most of my DVD's are used or like new condition. I buy a lot off Amazon marketplace and save money.

I also like DDD most dvd's I buy are under $14.

Wow, that's ridiculous. At the two pawn shops I frequent often, one charges $5.99 per disc and the other is $7.00. And they both usually have good stuff.

There a pawnshop by my house $5 for dvd's but he didn't have any I liked. Only had like 10 and all crappy movies. I like to buy blockbuster types good movies. I am not buying just to say I have x amount of DVD's.

I plan to go check out another pawn shop next month.

I can see where those who say they won't buy anything but new DVDs are coming from, but at the same time, I always chuckle at those select individuals who come off as real elitists when they act as if buying used DVDs is an insane notion. Most stores that sell them have inspected them, and most times, they're in great shape (cover included). Okay, yes there's a slight risk that you're running there, but most of these places will take them back if there's a problem.

Personally, the used CD/DVD shops around here blow and they charge practically what you'd pay for a new copy of the DVD, so I usually pass. I do have a friend whose uncle has certain connections, so she's usually hooking me up with a lot of DVDs for little or nothing at all, with a lot of them still being brand new. A couple of them that I can think of off-hand are the Minority Report 2-disc set and the Incredible Hulk (TV movie) 2-disc set, which were both factory sealed.

I say that if you get the chance to own a great DVD at a great price, go for it. Just because you've got the money to spend on brand new DVDs doesn't mean you can't "lower" yourself to buying used discs.

I'd buy used a lot more if I could find some decent prices. I don't know of many places around me that sell used but I looked into Newbury Comics and their used ones were $1-2 cheaper than the new ones and still higher than online sites.

If I knew of a place that had a decent selection for

I agree with many. I have a lot of used DVDs in my collection. Before I discovered Columbia House, I used to wait for all the "big" releases to hit the used section or PV at Hollywood Video. With CH, I can get two movies for the price of one and they are new. What I look for now used are box sets or stuff that CH does not carry. For instance, I am on the lookout now for Sopranos season 4 and I won't pay more than $50 for it. I purchased all the other sets used and you would never know by looking. I am sure that someone watched it once and traded it in.
