i bought the recent DVD of Ichi The Killer knowing that a bigger edition will be coming out down the road, thats about it for me.

as for Wicker Man, not only do you get the wooden box, you get the extended version of the film, which i find very much worth the upgrade.

In respect for my collection, I only buy the best. I would buy a lesser dvd if it was a film i didn't enjoy..... O wait I only buy movies I like.

Almost never. Though I just bought the Catch Me If You Can / Almost Famous double pack, and it has the lesser version of A.F.

Couldn't resist it, it was just too cheap.

Generally I get the best version available and I will only double dip if a new version of a movie I enjoy has a better transfer or DTS or is a Director's cut.

I usually buy the disc with the most features, but there have been times when I have bought the lesser of the 2, including:

Scarface (box sets count?)
Red Dragon
Seabiscuit

I make my decisions on a film-by-film basis. I don't need to have the 3-disc SE of every film I want. If the film is important to me, I'll dig a little deeper and spring the extra for the SE.

For example, I like "Westside Story".... the bare $9.99 version is just fine for me... it isn't worth $24.99 for the SE... to me. On the other hand, the AOD:LE was worth spending the full $39.99 MSRP at the time.

Sure I do, it depends on how much I perceive the added value of the more expensive version to have for ME. For example, I purchased the box of ET over the cheaper version. But I purchased the cheaper version of Seabiscuit, I did not feel the box set had that much added value to me.

I bought the single disc Lawerance of Arabia. Great movie, just didn't care about special features. I''m glad I waited on Mask of Zorro and got the Superbit version for $10... I base mine on the quality of the transfer and audio, how much I like the film and lastly, the extra features.

Sometimes I like the theatrical versions better than the direcors cut (Amadeus, Pearl Harbor) and reluctantly give up on special features.

I''m tempted to one day pick up The Professional version of Leon to have both cuts.

Yes, Memento and Tarzan to name a couple. Just don't care enough about those movies to reup for the special editions.

I've gotten some older DVD versions of films for cheap that I wouldn't have bought otherwise
(i.e., The Mask of Zorro, Do the Right Thing, etc...) or gotten the non-SE edition of a film if
the transfer was the same as that on the more expensive disc (E.T., Seabiscuit, etc...)

I bought the regular version of Bad Taste when the LE was on the same shelf. I felt saving $12 was better than having the extras & LE status.

Love the movie btw.

If there's two or more R-1 versions available, I always buy the best. However, I am lazy in that I generally buy the R-1 release without checking to see if there's a better release available in another region. So, therefore, I often end up with an R-1 release that's inferior to what I could have gotten elsewhere.

I bought the lesser version of both Red Dragon and LOTR movies (not gift sets)

I think the LOTR examples are sort of odd. Technically, the highest end version is the Gift Set w/ the Gollum statue. I think getting the 4 disc set with the extended cut, but not the GS (rather than the theatrical cut), would suffice as getting the better available versions. At least to me.
