Pirates Full & Widescreen?

Have some money in PayPal that I would like to spend and curious if Pirates is a Fullscreen and Widescreen disc? I can only find one version at places like amazon , futureshop and they say widescreen but some ebay sales have fullscreen listed.

The Region 1 DVD is widescreen only.

No complaints here.

Not happy about being forced to buy 2.35:1 which I hate but probably will buy anyway. They screwed up by not putting out wide and full in my opinion.

Another option..

Buy the VHS tape. It's fullscreen pan and scan. Problem solved.

Wow, are you being sarcastic? I only ask because it would be quite a sight to see a member make it as far as DVDtalk Gold Status and still not embrace OAR. That's nuts pal, just nuts!

Ergyu, no, he's not joking. GMLSKIS has the distinction of being just about the only person on here who doesn't appreciate OAR as much as everyone else here.

In this case, it's not an issue worth pursuing.

Kudos to Disney for sticking with the OAR here. I know it must've been tempting to pander especially on this title.

Or, more accurately, YOU screwed up by not fully embracing OAR and choosing to have 2/3 of a picture.

Ah 2.35:1 the only way widescreen should be. None of that 1.85:1 crap!

On Tuesday at Best Buy there were about 5 or 6 people standing around the huge display of DVD's frantically searching for the Fullscreen version.

I didn't have the heart to tell them it was in Widescreen only (probably because I can't stand to hear people whine "I can't believe that they didn't release this DVD in Fullscreen"). I was leaving that to the extra knowledgable Best Buy employees to inform them.

A few probably ending up buying it anyway, but I'm sure a few people decided to pass because it was in it's original OAR. Sad but True.

I was actually thinking about this the other day and started wondering if Disney was doing an experiment to see how many people really look for the Widescreen/Fullscreen on the package and how many just grab the first one they see. I've been in stores and have seen people pickup DVDs with barely a glance, and I would bet money that Disney will only see a miniscule drop in sales from not having a fullscreen version. Maybe it will be smaller than the cost of separate fullscreen versions and we can end the tyranny of the fullscreeners and have OAR only on all DVDs.

I saw this in the theaters in it's glorious original aspect ratio, and I can't imagine missing an inch of the action. Watch the movie people, not the bars!

I've said it before and I'll say it again: those black bars are in the theaters too, folks. Movies are all sorts of aspect ratios but each screen is only one size...so...something ain't gonna fit. The big, classier theaters that are equipped for 2.35:1 usually have curtains that come in from the sides to hide the extra space for 1.85:1, etc...

Agreed--actually, PotC was the last movie I've seen in the theater, and the ads/previews were at a different AR, and when PotC came on, they lowered the curtain from the top so it masked some of the screen. I guess 'no black bars', but I would think a big red ruffly curtain would be more distracting.
To badly paraphrase Ebert 'If you're watching the bars instead of the movie, it must not be a very good movie.'

So you're saying if they release both fullscreen and 2.35:1, you choose fullscreen? I just... wow. I... oh boy.

If you were joking, disregard my comment.

I applaud Disney for taking a rather bold move, in this day and age of dual FF and WS releases, and only releasing this film in its original aspect ratio as it was meant to be seen.

Of course, Wal-Mart won't be thrilled when Joe and Jane Sixpack start returning the DVD because of the "defective" black bars

Funny, when they're releasing a MAJOR release in OAR only, they're Disney, not Di$ney. Fascinating.
