POTC: French Popups...

I noticed a few popups during the veiwing. I know of two others that have also noticed them. All three of us have JVC players. Anyone else? (subtitles are turned off)

I saw it too and I also have a JVC player. However, another friend of mine has some generic cheapie player and saw it also. I put it in my PC and played with PowerDVD and saw and even ripped it to my hard drive without any subtitles at all and it was STILL there. I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned it.

Wow, weird. I ALSO have a JVC player and have the same problem. I didn't want to post it here because I felt it was probably because I have a bad dvd player...

However, it's easy to fix, just cycle through the subtitle options and reset it to off. Once you go past subtitle track 3 (which is the french one), you'll see another listing for track 3 appear without a language designator (this looks like a player error to me), hit the button one more time to get to the "off" setting. Voila, problem solved, the subtitles disappear (at least for me).

BTW, I have the same problem (French subtitles popping up without me asking for them) with the Who Framed Roger Rabbit disc,. However, that one is not fixable and has rendered that disc unwatchable for me. Pissed me off. At least I can fix the POTC one.

This is also similar to the subtitle problem I had on the Monty Python and the Holy Grail SE disc on my Toshiba player. That one works perfectly on the JVC, though.

It's not JVC specific. Maybe more common with JVC but like I said, my friends player is not JVC and it shows up on my PC as well even with the subtitles completely ripped out. Very weird. They must have been put in a weird place on the DVD for my ripper program to not remove it.

For me it only appears in two places. When the POTC title comes on screen in the opening and when the sign by the hung pirates appears towards the beginning of the film. Didn't see it anywhere else.

It looks like it happens whenenver something written (rather than spoken) is being translated into French. The same thing was true with the Roger Rabbit disc: all of the newspaper headlines, signs etc were subtitled, but not the dialogue.

It's a very strange error.

I had/have a similar problem with one of the Die Hard movies on my 4 year old Sony. For some strange reason, when street signs and things like that show on screen I get a French subtitle. I think it was Die Hard 3, but I can't remember now. I believe there was one other DVD that did this on my player as well. I made sure I had subtitles turned off too but to no avail.

I just had the same thing happen with X-2 on my PC. I watched it on my JVC last night and didn't notice anything though.

One of my players (a cheap region free one) does that too (but its only triggered if I manually cycle through the subtitle options first, and then after that, I can't shut them off). It also does that with my Futurama DVDs (in that case, the Spanish subs that translate signs or writing only).
