I think that Steel Magnolias is a must . . . I'm not sure I have ever met a woman who didn't like it.

I would also recommend:
- Little Women
- Sleepless In Seattle
- Forget Paris
- You've Got Mail
- When Harry Met Sally
- Notting Hill

depends maybe on what age your mom is. mine's in her early 60's and she loves absolutely anything with Clint Eastwood, John Wayne...all the old and (old-ish) westerns. she loved Braveheart (claims she hates the end, but watches it often, hehe), loved Gladiator. (i've thought of getting her Tombstone to add to her western collection.)

she also loves old musicals: My Fair Lady, Sound of Music, etc. she used to play piano, so i've recommended Immortal Beloved and Shine to her.

i think Life is Beautiful, Chocolat and Gone With the Wind would be good "mom choices" too.

I'd have to go with A Clockwork Orange. Best christmas/family film ever! That or Legend of the Overfiend. Can't go wrong with an animated classic for the hollidays.

those might be good if she has a very strong stomach and can handle rape and graphic violence.

I'd second Notting Hill. I picked that up for my mom this Christmas.

A lot of women seem to like anything with Julia Roberts.

If your mom is into older TV shows too, you might look into picking up Little House on the Prairie.

I'll second this selection. Toss in Visitor Q and call the in-laws.

"24" - my mom stayed up pretty much 24 hours watching this. She couldn't turn it off.

Friends.

Sex & The City.

Well since you mentioned TVLand type programing. Two things that come to mind are the new Dick Van Dyck Show season 1 and 2 sets or Mary Tyler Moore season 1 set.

I'm gonna get my mom the new Dirty Dancing dvd coming out the 9th, it's one of her favorite movies for some reason. I also got her the Three Colors Trilogy which is dirt cheap right now at DDD.com with coupon.

For some reason this reminds me of the classic Tank Girl quote: "You just got to think about it like the first time you got laid. You just gotta go, 'Daddy, are you sure this is right?'"

Oh how my mother chuckled when she saw him throwing his own excrement at the crowd whilst in the nude.

The season sets of "Due South" are pretty Mom-friendly. Amazon.ca has them. A bit pricier than most season sets, but it's a good show.

I always thought "The Wedding Singer" was a great romantic comedy. My mom liked it.

Finding Nemo, also, if she's into kids movies.

Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend is better for young children than for mothers since it is a cartoon.

For Christmas eve, our family will huddle around the TV and watch Straw Dogs.
