Star Wars OT DVD's - Confirmed September 2004 Release!!

I know we have a massive thread, but I wanted to post this seperate as it's the first actual real 100% proof that the DVD's are really coming. I was picking up my Alien Quadrilogy today from Media Play. And they had a sign up, and they were actually taking pre-orders for the September release of the DVD set.

I was stunned, and checked Suncoast as well on the way home, they also had it up. So, it looks like all the rumors and hopes have paid off. The Star Wars Trilogy is indeed on the way, September of 2004. Feel free to merge this, but I wanted to announce that we actually have confirmation.

Sorry, don't beat me.

Mr. Salty 12-03-03 01:42 AM

I don't consider an anonymous posting on a fan site by a guy who claims to work for a music retailer to be 100 percent proof of anything, especially considering the release date is on a Thursday, not a Tuesday.

Oh, and there is already a thread about this on the very first page of the forum.

TCG 12-03-03 03:37 AM

may it be the original versions.

Corky Roxbury 12-03-03 04:17 AM

and just because media play has it up for pre-order does not make it official, they will put anything on pre-order to get your $5

EPKJ 12-03-03 09:57 AM

It is not unusual for big releases to be released on days other than Tuesday. Spider-Man was released all by itself on a Friday.

You got that right. I went into a Media Play about 2 weeks after T3 came out in theatres and I was asked if I wanted to reserve it on dvd, when it wouldn't even be announced for a couple months afterward.

Rogue588 12-03-03 10:59 AM

this news gets a big 'ol I'll Believe It When I Have 'em In My Hands from me..

B.S.Preston,ESQ 12-03-03 11:27 AM

if true then

PalmerJoss 12-03-03 11:51 AM

I'd wait for an official announcement from 20'th Century Fox before everyone gets themselves worked up. It was a very long wait for Indiana Jones, and there had been internet rumors for years. I'll wait for the press release before I get excited.

B.S.Preston,ESQ 12-03-03 11:54 AM

did they have some official looking poster or was it jsut a flyer that looks like ot came from the manager's computer?

Brian Shannon 12-03-03 12:38 PM

as it's the first actual real 100% proof
A sign-up sheet? You are kidding right?

Spiky 12-03-03 04:02 PM

It'll be SE, not OT.

Kidding? I don't think so . . . my best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw a sign-up sheet at Thirty-One Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

Why, this is the most exciting news I've heard since Pan Am started a sign-up for the first vacation flights to the moon.

jough 12-03-03 10:06 PM

There was a post on usenet that said it was coming in Sept. 2004 too, so it must be true.

The Antipodean 12-03-03 10:07 PM

And tomorrow I'll start a thread about the first thread I read that said it had the first 100% actual real proof about this! ;)

It's been a long wait for Star Wars, too. :D At some point, Lucas is going to relent.

JarJarBinks 12-04-03 01:18 AM

Oh well, figured I'd pass on the news of an actual sheet from the corporate office. With the Fox and Lucasfilm logos on it. But if people wish to just poo-poo and mock the news, feel free. But I've seen the in-store ad w/ concept art with my own two eyes. Take it as you wish.

Corky Roxbury 12-04-03 04:29 AM

yeah but it is musicland company, I could print up a flyer that has the fox logo and the lucasfilm logos that says the dvds come out next tuesday, it does not mean it is true,

come to think about it the bootlegs on ebay have the logos on it, so they must be real.

.....off to ebay we go

porieux 12-04-03 05:14 AM

By OT are you referring to the original versions and not the 'special' editions?

Now that I'd like to see. Not holding my breath though.

What'd you do, copy my signature?

Brian Shannon 12-04-03 06:27 AM

Take it as you wish
We are.

Your rumor conflicts with several other rumors already posted on this board.

I know EXACTLY when Star Wars will be out . . . . . . .

The day I have it in my hands at the register and not a moment before.

Well. I must admit that it did keep it fresh in my mind, but no, I did not actually copy it from your sig. :D

Toad 12-04-03 10:03 AM

Thanks for the post!

I'm excited, and would love to have it in my hands next September.

Seems like perfect timing -- a few months before the trailer is released for Ep. III, getting peoples' minds back on Star Wars, etc.

I also read somewhere that so far there is no boxed set announced for the OT (this was at theforce.net, take that for what it's worth). That could make sense -- maybe the first 3 will be released separately, then after Ep. III, we'll get that 6-piece ultimate box set that everyone keeps bitching about.

Spiky 12-04-03 11:31 AM

Now that is optimism at its finest. You go, man!!

milo bloom 12-04-03 01:05 PM

I know we're still dealing with rumors and hearsay, but we're getting it from a lot of sources this time, and they're all saying similar things. Plus, as Toad said, the timing is very good. Lucasfilm has had a big DVD release the last few falls in a row. Episode 1, Ep 2, Indy Jones. They've apparently "found time" to do the DVDs, so I'm pretty optimistic too.

jough 12-04-03 01:09 PM

snowmaker, that quote in your sig comes from a very popular film, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which is popular with many many people on this forum who know much of the dialogue in that film by heart.

So to assume that someone copied you sig because they made a reference to the same film that you do is just silly.

mookyman 12-04-03 09:43 PM

In defense of Jar Jar (strange to write that), I used to work for Suncoast, and while I cannot definitively say that these stores weren't just pretending, this practice would be extremely frowned-upon by most other stores. At my Suncoast, we were not allowed to put anything up for pre-order without a heads-up from the film's distributors, and only recieved delays or cancellations about 3 or 4 times over the course of 3 years. This may not be 100%, but it's still more than a good chance.

porieux 12-04-03 10:08 PM

I still think it should be clarified what people mean by 'OT'

I've long thought we should use
OT: OE for the original theatrical editions
and
OT: SE for the special editions.

However, when Lucasfilm says it, it means whatever the current iteration is.

jiggawhat 12-04-03 11:57 PM

I noticed in EGM a review for Rogue Squadron 3 where they were talking about the dvd quality of the clips in the game and they said that "this is as close as we will get to the dvds until we get them next fall." Unless they know something that we don't that seems like a pretty strong indication that these dvds will be coming out in Sept 04.

CanadianKnight 12-05-03 04:59 PM

Gah.

If it's LucasFilm, they mean the first three movies. Period. Don't know how many times I've said this.

People need to quit confusing Original Trilogy (in reference to the first three films) and the original CUT of those films.

Sorry. Pet peeve of mine. ;)

fumanstan 12-05-03 05:51 PM

I agree, OT means the first 3 movies. Whether it be special edition or original cut is going to be unknown until we get the official dvd announcement, but unfortunatly everytime we see "The Star Wars OT is coming out!" someone has to whine about the special editions.

porieux 12-05-03 06:33 PM

The word ORIGINAL is the operative word here. The Special Editions are not the Original Trilogy in my opinion.

And I'm certainly not whining. Are you whining about my question? ;)

It all depends on what the word "original" is describing. Is it the original versions (theatrical releases vs. SE's) or the original trilogy (ep. 4-6 vs. ep. 1-3). That's where the confusion seems to be . . .

jough 12-06-03 03:25 PM

Screw you people. I'm still waiting for episodes 7, 8, and 9.

Steve Phillips 12-08-03 04:40 PM

You know that the DVDs won't be the original versions.

You know the DVDs won't be the 1997 Revised versions either.

You are going to get all new versions of these films, with further additions and tinkering from Lucas.

Does anyone really expect anything else?

Terrell 12-08-03 06:58 PM

Um, no dude! Use your brain. If the DVDs are coming out in 2004, there's no way they will be new versions that have been furthered tinkered with. Lucas and ILM are swamped on a little project called Episode III. They have absolutely no time to make changes on the DVDs. Whatever comes out in 2004 will be either the originals, or more likely the '97 special editions.

I'm still waiting for episodes 7, 8, and 9.
You're going to be waiting one hell of a long time, because Lucas has already said on multiple occasions, no more Star Wars films ever. As for the recent rumor of him changing his mind, he stated at the recent Lucasfilm event that the rumor was nothing more than media fabrication. There will be no more Star Wars films.
